is there any documentation or notes on adding a SQL backend to an existing SBR Appliance?

An external Database (SQL DB) can be used for either Authentication, Accounting, or both. And there are seperate chapters for that in the SBR Administration Guide.

You can't add a SQL backend to an SBR Appliance.

Because the appliance OS (Windows) don't have ODBC setting.
