The line on the graph below is unusually flat. Unusual for a routing engine CPU utilization of a heavily loaded router exporting more than 60 various metrics of about 500 objects every 15 seconds.

graphicalinterface.pngNetwork change cycles are growing increasingly shorter and more frequent. As a result, operators need as much visibility into the network as possible to help them identify, isolate and resolve potential issues as quickly as possible to keep their networks running smoothly.



In this discussion on network based analytics, I discuss the merits of analytics, how data can be gathered from networks to create these insightful decisions, and review the pros and cons of exposing too much to the "big data" analytics engines that may eventually learn too much about us. Is it just inevitable that hiding personal information will be a thing of the past?

The use of technologies to not just describe what is happening around us, but predict what is going to happen, or even prescribe changes to meet an optimum outcome are all within the reach in many things we do today. From health care to financial planning, technological advancements in Cognitive Science - the study of thought, learning, and mental organization, which draws on aspects of psychology, linguistics, philosophy, and computer modeling, is helping us be better at what we do, or plan to do. Some may argue that computing systems are not as advanced as the human brain. However Cognitive Systems have proved to solve problems beyond the capacity of the human mind. In the realm of Networking and Communications, we are seeing the potential to use machine learning and artificial intelligence with data collected from the networking systems and analyzed in real time, to not just solve existing problems but creatively improve services and offer new solutions.

In this series of blogs on Analytics, we will examine the use of descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics in networking solutions as the foundation to reach these new horizons in Cognitive Systems.
