Network Design – Let Me Count the Ways

If there is one thing I am absolutely sure about network design and architecture, it is that there are no absolutes ;-) Ok maybe there are a few, but there is a reason why equipment vendors build some boxes big, and some small. There is a reason why equipment vendors develop some line cards with as much functionality as is physically possible, and others with as much cost reduction as possible. There is a reason why equipment vendors develop modular plug-in service/application processing cards that can be deployed only where they are needed. One size does not fit all. Operators need a range of products that meet different demonstrated and future preferences with respect to at least: Flexibility, scalability, reliability, availability, security, manageability, and service velocity, in what ever quantity, quality, time, cost, and utility desired.
