  • 1.  4500 virtual chassis - how to configure ports?

    Posted 08-21-2013 23:39

    Hi!

    I created virtual chassis between two 4500, using xe interfaces and it works

    stack@kz-sw-aggrig-4500-1> show virtual-chassis status

    Preprovisioned Virtual Chassis
    Virtual Chassis ID: f8e1.7f2d.3203
    Virtual Chassis Mode: Mixed
                                               Mstr           Mixed Neighbor List
    Member ID  Status   Serial No    Model     prio  Role      Mode ID  Interface
    0 (FPC 0)  Prsnt    XXX068 ex4500-40f 129  Backup       Y  1  vcp-255/0/38    1  vcp-255/0/39
    1 (FPC 1)  Prsnt    XXX863 ex4500-40f 129  Master*      Y  0  vcp-255/0/38     0  vcp-255/0/39

    stack@kz-sw-aggrig-4500-1> show configuration virtual-chassis
    preprovisioned;
    no-split-detection;
    member 0 {
        role routing-engine;
        serial-number XXX068;
    }
    member 1 {
        role routing-engine;
        serial-number XXX863;
    }
    fast-failover {
        xe;
    }

    I interconnected these switches to different network devices and found out that if member 0 fails I lose connection to my virtual chassis and different network devices. If the member 1 fails - no problem.

    Next step is checking interfaces:

    stack@kz-sw-aggrig-4500-1> show interfaces terse
    Interface               Admin Link Proto    Local                 Remote
    vcp-255/0/38            up    up
    vcp-255/0/38.32768      up    up
    vcp-255/0/39            up    up
    vcp-255/0/39.32768      up    up
    xe-0/0/3                up    down
    xe-0/0/3.0              up    down eth-switch
    xe-0/0/32               up    up
    xe-0/0/32.0             up    up   eth-switch
    xe-0/0/33               up    up
    xe-0/0/33.0             up    up   eth-switch
    xe-0/0/34               up    up
    xe-0/0/34.0             up    up   eth-switch
    xe-0/0/35               up    up
    xe-0/0/35.0             up    up   eth-switch
    xe-0/0/36               up    up
    xe-0/0/36.0             up    up   eth-switch
    xe-0/0/37               up    up
    xe-0/0/37.0             up    up   eth-switch
    xe-1/0/3                up    down
    xe-1/0/32               up    up
    xe-1/0/33               up    down
    xe-1/0/34               up    up
    xe-1/0/35               up    down
    xe-1/0/36               up    up
    xe-1/0/37               up    up

    I found that VC can see these interfaces!!!

    xe-1/0/3                up    down
    xe-1/0/32               up    up
    xe-1/0/33               up    down
    xe-1/0/34               up    up
    xe-1/0/35               up    down
    xe-1/0/36               up    up
    xe-1/0/37               up    up

    But how can I configure it? How can I add these ports to configuration?

    Hi,

    Disable split detection , as it is two member virtual chassis.

    Go through below kb link for more information on split detection

    http://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB13879&smlogin=true

    Else when backup rebooted or shutdown, master will go to linecard state.

    Actually it was a silly question  - because the answer was really easy. But I ve never configured junipers before and had only wide cisco background.

    And I coudn't find the necessary answer on the juniper website. ( I think it is a big disadvantage on Juniper.)

    But thank you for your answer it really helped me
