  • 1.  Cannot upgrade sw on EX 4200

    Hi

I'm trying to upgrade the software on an EX 4200 and am failing with all methods. I tried the J-Web 'Upload Package' option but get told that the image is not a Junos image:

The software package (jinstall-ex-4200-9.4R2.9-domestic-signed) was not a Junos package.

When I try the 'Install Package' and ftp://172.30.20.212/jinstall-ex-4200-9.4R2.9-domestic-signed I get a message htat the packege is being fetched, then I get an Installation Progress box(see below attachement)

When I try  request system software add force ftp://172.30.20.212/jinstall-ex-4200-9.4R2.9-domestic-signed , I get the response that the switch is fetching the file and I can see it being transferred from my ftp server, but then I get the following message:

    Fetching package...
    Pushing bundle to fpc1

    Validating on fpc1jinstall-ex-4200-9.4R2.9-domestic-signed
    truncated or corrupted package: /var/tmp/mchassis-install.tgz

When I try ftp 172.30.20.212 from the cli, I connect to my remote station and perform a GET jinstall-ex-4200-9.4R2.9-domestic-signed, I am told there is not enough space left on the device... but these are out of the box.

    ftp> get jinstall-ex-4200-9.4R2.9-domestic-signed
    local: jinstall-ex-4200-9.4R2.9-domestic-signed remote: jinstall-ex-4200-9.4R2.9-domestic-signed
    200 PORT command successful.
150 File status OK ; about to open data connection

    106101416 bytes received in 23.28 seconds (4.35 MB/s)
    ftp> quit
    221 Service closing control connection

From start shell, and cd /root, cd /var, cd /var/tmp, I see no residual images either retained from my attempts or anyone elses, but am I looking in the right place.

I had this same problem with the two development switches for this customer, but I found the images in the above diretories and deleted them, then installed without any problem.

These two switches will be part of a virtual-chassis in the prod environment, a previous VC Problem post refers to the switches in the development environment.

Thanks in advance to anybody that can point me in the right direction here.

    Hi mooey

I think the best way to do this will be:

    - First, try to make some place in the flash:

    "request system storage cleanup"

this will ask you if you want to remove unusefull files and you will answer yes

    - Second, check the free space on the flash:

    "show system storage"

-third, download the file via FTP on the switch :

"get ..." don't forget to do it in binary (type bin) if you don't do that your file will be seen corrupted.

    -Fourth, install the new version:

"request system software add jinstall........  no-copy unlink"

The two last option will make the final job ... As I remember if you don't use them your upgrade will not have enough room in the flash

    That's all

I Hope This will Help you

    Mooey,

I believe the problem is that you are removing the .tgz file type extension or uncompressing the file.  Please add the .tgz back to the file or redownload the file from Juniper and upload as is.  The file should work fine when upgrading via JWeb, as I have upgraded a few switches already using this method.  The Juniper EX will uncompress the file once uploaded.

    Hi Guys,

I have tried to download the .tgz file from Juniper but when I click the EX series info I am told I need to go to another site, however this site is constantly down saying try back later.

I also performed the request system storage cleanup but what was not given a prompt to answer yes, though it did appear to remove some files. However, when I ftp the file across using binary I still am told the file is full:

    root@RPA_Prod_4200> ftp 172.30.20.146
    Connected to 172.30.20.146.

    Hi Mooey

It seems that you realy need to delete some old files from your flash.
Try to see where you have some big files:

there should be some under the log (/var/log)
    try do delete some:
    "clear log all"
There should be some under the home directory of each user (/var/home/*)
    try to delete some:
    "file delete /var/home/user/*"

but the command that I provided should realy do the same job:

    "user@EX3200> request system storage cleanup

    List of files to delete:

             Size Date         Name
       133B Apr 19 19:19 /var/log/default-log-messages.0.gz
       121B Apr 19 19:18 /var/log/default-log-messages.1.gz
       299B Apr 19 19:19 /var/log/interactive-commands.0.gz
      1156B Apr 19 19:18 /var/log/interactive-commands.1.gz
       121B Apr 19 19:19 /var/log/messages.0.gz
      5971B Apr 19 19:18 /var/log/messages.1.gz
        27B Apr 19 19:18 /var/log/wtmp.0.gz
       216B Apr 19 18:59 /var/log/wtmp.1.gz
       133B Apr 13 20:39 /var/log/wtmp.2.gz
     124.0K Apr 13 20:34 /var/tmp/gres-tp/env.dat
         0B Apr 13 20:34 /var/tmp/gres-tp/lock
Delete these files ? [yes,no] (no)

also when you get the new file from the ftp server try to download to your local /var/tmp directory as I see in the snapshoot you gave that it has a lot of space.

Realy I believe you need first to have some more space on what is seen on your switch :

    /dev/da0s1a             184M       184M     -14.6M      109%  /

saying that it has minus 14meg left, this is not normal and has to be positive.

Please provide the outputs from your "request system storage cleanup" command

Can you give us details on this? What URL patch you are following?

    Thx

    Hi,

    You should specify folder /var/tmp/

    Try so command:

    labuss> request system software add /var/tmp/jinstall-ex-4200-10.4R6.5-domestic-signed.tgz no-validate

    Hi ,

If the error is seen as below:

    Fetching package...
    Pushing bundle to fpc1

    Validating on fpc1jinstall-ex-4200-9.4R2.9-domestic-signed
    truncated or corrupted package: /var/tmp/mchassis-install.tgz

It means that the package is corrupt.

    Try downloading it once again.

Do a request system software rollback before installing it again.

    Hey,

move the image file to "/var/tmp". That's was my solution!
