Switching

Trying to create an RVI on ex4300 but the below option isn't present...works on my ex2200-C. 

user@switch# set interfaces vlan unit logical-unit-number family inet address inet-address

Do you have to use an IRB interface instead of RVI?

Slightly different CLI on EX4300 and other newer models.  Your issue is ELS CLI vs older EX CLI on EX2200.  Look here for details and link to perform a translation of config from one to the other.  There are a few minor changes between older EX and newer ELS.  You must be running old code on the EX4300 as newer code version should error on incorrect syntax use.  For info on ELS look here:

I have one last quick question if you have a second. I'm configuring the 4300 to be our Layer 3 core switch as we replace our cisco infrastructure. I was successful in linking l2 to l3 interface as well as giving the l3 an inet address, but I'm unable to ping it from the 4300 itself. Do you have to put a static route for it to ping itsel? 

Ping it how?  From console connection?  IP address should be ping able from any console connection, be it local or remote SSH/telnet.  Sorry no idea what you are trying to do.
