  • 1.  EX2200-C Temperature Sensors

    Posted 05-09-2014 13:19

    Hi -

    I've had an EX2200-C for a few years now and initially noticed that the "show chassis environment" shows a bogus reading for one of the PHYs:

    {master:0}
    prox@enterprise> show chassis environment
    Class Item                           Status     Measurement
    Power FPC 0 Power Supply 0 OK
    Temp  FPC 0 GEPHY1                   OK         40 degrees C / 104 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY2                   OK         35 degrees C / 95 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY3                   OK         246 degrees C / 474 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY4                   OK         35 degrees C / 95 degrees F

     Obviously, my switch isn't on fire and GEPHY3 is not 246 degrees C.  The other values look correct, though.  I thought this was a bug in Junos and forgot about it until now.  I've upgraded the version of Junos several times over the years and GEPHY3 is still reporting bogus temperature values.

    This isn't a CLI snafu since the same values are returned via SNMP.

    Does it sound like I have a bad thermal diode in my switch?  Do other folks have normal readings for all the PHYs in their EX2200-Cs?

    Thanks!

    - Mark

    Normal here 🙂

    root@sjc02-spi-1aa55-dist1> show chassis environment
    Class Item                           Status     Measurement
    Power FPC 0 Power Supply 0 OK
    Temp  FPC 0 GEPHY1                   OK         60 degrees C / 140 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY2                   OK         55 degrees C / 131 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY3                   OK         55 degrees C / 131 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY4                   OK         40 degrees C / 104 degrees F

    Hi

    If it is really 246C, you should have received an alarm.

    Do you happen to see any error in chassisd log file?

    Do you see any alarms when run below commands:

    show chassis alarms

    show system alarms

    If the above all said does not show up errors, you needn't worry.

    You could potentially see this kind of bizzare value because of counter overflow or bug in Junos.

    You can open up a JTAC case to file superficial defect with engineering.

    Regards,

    Raveen

    Thanks for the replies.  Ah, so other folks have normal readings - good information.

    About alarms, there are none:

    {master:0}
    prox@enterprise> show chassis alarms
    No alarms currently active

    {master:0}
    prox@enterprise> show system alarms
    No alarms currently active

     I'll see if I can open up a JTAC case to see what they think, thanks!

    I am seeing exactly same issue with our EX2200-C
    thakala@JuniperSW2> show chassis environment
    Class Item                           Status     Measurement
    Power FPC 0 Power Supply 0 OK
    Temp  FPC 0 GEPHY1                   OK         25 degrees C / 77 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY2                   OK         246 degrees C / 474 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY3                   OK         35 degrees C / 95 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY4                   OK         40 degrees C / 104 degrees F

    We are running JUNOS 12.3R4.6 release on this system. Tomi

    This is a known issue(cosmetic one) and it will be fixed in 12.3R7.

    Nice... now it's fixed (via a Junos upgrade):

    {master:0}
    prox@enterprise> show chassis environment
    Class Item                           Status     Measurement
    Power FPC 0 Power Supply 0 OK
    Temp  FPC 0 GEPHY1                   OK         45 degrees C / 113 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY2                   OK         35 degrees C / 95 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY3                   OK         45 degrees C / 113 degrees F
          FPC 0 GEPHY4                   OK         40 degrees C / 104 degrees F
