EX2200 fan speed discrepancy

  • 1.  EX2200 fan speed discrepancy

    Posted 07-29-2014 11:43

EX220 JunOS releases have an intermittent fan speed discrepancy. For any single unique EX2200 in a static environment, depending on the JunOS release, the fan will either spin at slow speed or a higher speed. This bug pops up from time to time; and then disappears.

For example and specifically, all EX2200 JunOS 12.3 releases up to and including 12.3-R5.7 the fan operates at the slower speed and indicates OK from a "show chassis environment" command. From 12.3-R6.6 onwards, the fan spins at a higher speed FOR THE EXACT SAME hardware and environmental conditions.

this bug first appeared in 10.4; and was repeated in 11.4. Some releases had the high speed fan; some releases did not. The development tree for JunOS on the EX2200 has a recurrent bug which needs addressed.

I have EX2200s deployed in labs where this type of loud fan noise is not acceptable. The low noise level was a selection criteria over other switching equipment. Please remove this bug from the development tree.

Have you tried updating the "firmware" to see if that resolves the issue?

  • 3.  RE: EX2200 fan speed discrepancy

    Posted 07-29-2014 15:56

All the firmware on all my switches is current.

OK, updated the firmware on the test switch. Same firmware version as before.

    show chassis firmware
    Part                     Type       Version
    FPC 0                    uboot      U-Boot 1.1.6 (Mar 26 2011 - 04:38:23)   1.0
                             loader     FreeBSD/arm U-Boot loader 1.1

Reboot to the other slice which still has 12.3R-7.7; running of the fans commences.

No joy. I really think this is a blimlet in the code tree somewhere.

We have seen the same issue.

We have an EX2200 in a small office. With 12.3R1 the fan would almost never spin up, as soon as we upgraded to 12.3R6 the fan will spin up for about 30 seconds every 10 minutes.

It is almost enough for me to replace it or at least downgrade the firmware again.

                             loader     FreeBSD/PowerPC U-Boot bootstrap loader 2.4

Just shoting in the dark on this one, the dateshould be newer. I am ot sure if there are differences in the actual package files though the versions are the same.

Maybe try downgrading to 12.3 R6.6

Next best bet is to open a case with JTAC. It culd be phycial and maybe device need to be RMA'd

Yes, you are just shooting in the dark, lyndidon. I suggest you review the previous posts, specifically the first post, and note R6.6 did indeed have the fan issue. I have verified the issue not just on 12.3; but also on 10.4 and 11.4 -- multiple releases of each version. I did not post this problem just on a whim and a single oberservation.

Also note I have verified this problem on nearly half a dozen EX2200 all of different manufacture dates; this is not a single piece of hardware issue which can be fixed by an RMA.

My advise is to open a JTAC case and provide the information required to narrow this down. It might be a software defect, but wait for the JTAC confirmation.

Any update for this issue? I bought an ex2200 from Amazon, and upgrade to latest version, 12.3r8.7 from older version. I also did upgrade Jloader successfully.

After reboot, the device was running weird. It spin up very fast, the noise is pretty loud every 10 mins, each time it lasts 1 min.... I dont know what the problem is.

    Need you guys help.

    Thanks,

    Update;

I did show chassis environtment, got

Fans FPC 0 Fan 1  OK  Spinning at normal speed

FPC 0 Fan 2  OK  Spinning at normal speed

FPC 0 PSU Fan  OK  Spinning at normal speed

    ....

    EX2200-24T-4G (routing-engine @ REV 20) loaded with 12.3R8.7 and U-Boot 1.1.6 also has the flucuating fan speeds.

    On-going test results...

    VersionFluctuation
    14.1X53-D10.1  Yes
    12.3R8.7  Yes
    12.3R7.7  Yes
    12.3R6.6  Yes
    12.3R5.7  No
    12.3R1.7  No
    11.4R1.6  No

On my test switch, 12.3 R5.7 updated to R8.7, the fans turn to a higher speed and stay there. Same environmental conditions, same hardware, same configuration. "show chassis environment" show the fans spinning at normal speed for both R5.7 and R8.7; but the fans are definitively spinning at a higher speed. Booted back to alt slice with R5.7, fans operating slowly, consistently, and quietly again.

It would be nice to get this problem fixed once and for all!

Unfortunately I don't have support on my EX2200 and I am unlikely to purchase any more.

Did anyone get on to Juniper about this issue? Keen to know if it is going to be fixed.

  • 14.  RE: EX2200 fan speed discrepancy

    Posted 03-26-2015 09:10

Yep, this is still a problem here after updating to the latest 12.3.  I do not have JTAC support on this model anymore.  Anyone with a current contract able to open a case and point to this discussion?  It's driving me nuts.

  • 15.  RE: EX2200 fan speed discrepancy

    Posted 03-30-2015 20:59

Well, I opened a case w/o a valid contract but never heard back from Juniper on this.  It seems they don't mind having a defective product/software combo out there right now.  Bottom line, do not load up the JTAC-recommended release package for the EX2200 if you don't want your fans to rev up constantly every minute or so.

  • 16.  RE: EX2200 fan speed discrepancy

    Posted 04-02-2015 10:15

Well I heard back from Juniper.  The person I talked to had no interest in the topic until I provided a valid SN under J-Care contract.  Understandable, but it's a real pity since it appears to be something that would be very easy to duplicate, and very easy to fix in software, and it's clearly a problem for a lot of users.

If anyone from Juniper bothers to read this forum, 12.3r8 breaks your EX2200 platform.

    From http://juniper.cluepon.net/index.php/Hidden_Commands

Is it possible to test the fans at normal speed get them running at the 'normal' volume level or do they still seem to be high speed I wonder?

test chassis fan speed full-speed (from operational mode - turns fans to full speed)
test chassis fan speed normal-speed (from operational mode - turns fans to normal speed)

Thanks for the idea.  I tried both these commands but they don't seem to apply to the 2200 series:

    {master:0}
root@S1> test chassis fan speed full-speed
error: command is not valid on the ex2200-24t-4g

    {master:0}
root@S1> test chassis fan speed normal
error: command is not valid on the ex2200-24t-4g

It appears as though this was intentional to protect the hardware due to some temperature conditions.

The fact the behavior is consistent across newer versions, would also lead to the same conclusion.

This is really unfortunate. Is downgrading really the only option here? Losing 2 years of updates is a terrible solution.

  • 21.  RE: EX2200 fan speed discrepancy

    Posted 07-06-2015 09:20

I suppose the options are to live with the faster fan speeds, or downgrade and live with a higher risk of component failure later due to thermal issues later if you downgrade. You could talk to your SE to communicate the sound issue concerns and see if there are other options for cooling which don't involve constantly spinning up/down the fans every 10min.
