I have just installed a third EX4200 in my VC and the red alarm LED is still on after an hour. The chassis itself is reporting no alarms, and the LCD is showing its usual SPD, and ADM alarms. "show chassis lcd" also reports the LED off, and "show chassis alarms" shows "No alarms".

Is ths just a time lag, and the LED will eventually go off? I don't care much one way or the other except everyone is walking by these brand new devices and  asking "how come the alarm LED is on"?

What JUNOS version? A bell in the back of mind is ringing for a fixed bug... maybe someone else know/remembers more/better?

No. You want to run that command when you have a know good working config; kind of a baseline and if you make changes that are running fine, then also good to update it. That command simply saves the existing configuration that you restore in an emergency situation when you need to rollback to you last know good working config.

You have to run a specific command to reboot the system.

Thanks, all. Yep, I did save the rescue config. I did this from the JWeb interface, though, followed by a couple of commit syncs form the command line.. I'll go back over to the stack later today and try saving the rescue config from the CLI and see what happens. This is 9.5R2.7.

Hi you should have seen the reason why you had this alarm by simply try:

"show chassis alarm"  or "show system alarm"

    ...

    User@TEST> show system alarms

    1 alarms currently active

    Alarm time               Class  Description

2009-07-20 04:52:13 UTC  Minor  Rescue configuration is not set

Not a working solution yet - LED is still on, I ran request system configuration rescue save from the CLI, show chassis alarms and show system alarms are all clear.

When I run  "request support information member 2" I get

    root@ccf4200stack> show chassis alarms no-forwarding
error: the alarm-control subsystem is not running
root@ccf4200stack> show chassis hardware detail no-forwarding
error: the chassis-control subsystem is not running

However, when I run  "request support information member 1" I see

    root@ccf4200stack> show chassis alarms no-forwarding
error: Aborted! This command can only be used on the master routing engine.
    [etc]

So, request system reboot member 2 - And the LED goes off. Yay.

So, the VC member just came up in a slighty cockeyed manner.

I don't consider it a hassle to reboot a new VC after it's been installed and "commit synced" with the master. Considering my experience with "stacks" from other vendors, this is trivial. Thanks for all the replies.

I shoudl add that hese messages still come up after the reboot for member 2:
error: the alarm-control subsystem is not running
error: the chassis-control subsystem is not running

Member 0 is master and member 1 is backup.

Yep, threw a fourth member on the VC today, and a "commit sync" followed by a reboot of the new member will clear the LED.

    More info:

"request system configuration rescue save" will clear the alarm LED for the RE and BK RE, but not for members in linecard (LC) mode.

9.5R2.7 is the version where this is happening.

    Procedure:

    - configure FPC 0

    - add FPC 1

    - "request system configuration rescue save" -> Both alarm LEDS go out

    - add FPC 2 - alarm LED on FPC 2 comes on

    - "request system configuration rescue save" -> Nothing happens

    - add FPC 3 - alarm LED on FPC 3 comes on, alarm LED on FPC 2 still on

    - "request system configuration rescue save" -> Nothing happens

    - Reload

    - Oddly, mastership rearranged - FPC 2 became BK RE, FPC 2 (BK RE) alarm LED remained ON, alarm LED on FPC 3 (LC) off

    - "request system configuration rescue save" ->FPC 2 alarm LED goes off, all LEDS off now.
