  • 1.  Interpreting "show pfe route ip-"

    Posted 06-13-2013 10:25

Below is the output of show pfe route ip.

    ---show pfe route ip---
    Slot 0

    IPv4 Route Table 0, default.0, 0x0:
Destination NH IP Addr Type NH ID Interface
    ------------ --------------- -------- ----- ---------

    128.174.11.64/26 Resolve 1439 RT-ifl 81 vlan.824 ifl 81
    128.174.11.64 128.174.11.64 Recv 1434 RT-ifl 81 vlan.824 ifl 81
    128.174.11.65 128.174.11.65 Local 1435 RT-ifl 0

    1. what does type Resolve mean ?

    2. Does Recv mean desination address is on the box. For entry 2 is the prefix /32 ?

    3. What is Local entry ? how is it different from Recv

    1. what does type Resolve mean ?

My understanding of type Resolve is that it is similar to a Direct address in the normal routing table - any traffic bound for a host this prefix needs to be ARP'ed for and when an appropritate MAC is received, the host address address is placed in the Next-Hop entry with a type of Unicast.

    2. Does Recv mean desination address is on the box. For entry 2 is the prefix /32 ?

No - that is Local.  Recv seems to be some sort of marker for the network address of a subnet (since there is no mask attached to it)

    3. What is Local entry ? how is it different from Recv

The local type is the same as a local route in your routing table - it is an interface address (/32) that is bound to an interface on this box - in your case, it is the address of interface vlan.824

    thanks Ben.

Any idea what network mask could RECV indicate ?

I don't think it's a prefix, so it doesn't need a mask - I think it is just the "network" address.  Use the Resolve address if you want to know the mask

    1.

    128.174.38.64/27                                     Resolve 1428 RT-ifl 88 vlan.438 ifl 88
    128.174.38.64        128.174.38.64         Recv 1426 RT-ifl 88 vlan.438 ifl 88
    128.174.38.65        128.174.38.65          Local 1427 RT-ifl 0
    128.174.38.70         128.174.38.70         Unicast 1416 RT-ifl 88 vlan.438 ifl 88
    128.174.38.72         128.174.38.72         Unicast 1443 RT-ifl 88 vlan.438 ifl 88
    128.174.38.78          128.174.38.78        Unicast 1437 RT-ifl 88 vlan.438 ifl 88
    128.174.38.81          128.174.38.81        Unicast 1422 RT-ifl 88 vlan.438 ifl 88
    128.174.38.82          128.174.38.82        Unicast 1423 RT-ifl 88 vlan.438 ifl 88
    128.174.38.84          128.174.38.84         Unicast 1449 RT-ifl 88 vlan.438 ifl 88
    128.174.38.86          128.174.38.86         Unicast 1447 RT-ifl 88 vlan.438 ifl 88
    128.174.38.95                                             Bcast 1419 RT-ifl 88 vlan.438 ifl 88

These are the entries from the "show pfe route ip" . So what I understand is

First we have a Resolve Entry which is a network adress along with the prefix and then followed by addresses in that subnet (including unicast and broadcast). Is my interpretation correct ?

also destination like 128.174.38.70, 128.174.38.81 have the same value for their NextHop  so they are directly connected right ?

    2. Also some entries are of form :

    130.126.0.156/30                172.20.104.237   Unicast  1354 RT-ifl 0 vlan.3030 ifl 71
    130.126.0.169                     172.20.104.233   Unicast  1347 RT-ifl 0 vlan.3029 ifl 70
    130.126.0.171                     172.20.104.233   Unicast  1347 RT-ifl 0 vlan.3029 ifl 70
    130.126.0.172                     172.20.104.233   Unicast  1347 RT-ifl 0 vlan.3029 ifl 70
    130.126.0.173                     172.20.104.237   Unicast  1354 RT-ifl 0 vlan.3030 ifl 71
    130.126.0.174                     172.20.104.233   Unicast  1347 RT-ifl 0 vlan.3029 ifl 70
    130.126.0.176/30                172.20.104.233   Unicast  1347 RT-ifl 0 vlan.3029 ifl 70

In this case do the highlighted entries have /32 prefix ? since I dont see they are related to 130.126.0.156/30
