    Hello all,

    Apologies if this is in the wrong forum section, but this is an interface on a switch that i beleive is the problem.

    I've got a 1ge MM fibre connection between an EX4550 and MX5 (both brand new) and I can't setup a simple point-to-point L3 interface. I'm guessing i am doing something wrong. The interface on the EX4550 is up up, but the MX5 is up down. The optics on the MX5 show that it is receiving light:

    show interfaces diagnostics optics ge-1/1/1
    Physical interface: ge-1/1/1
        Laser bias current                        :  6.832 mA
        Laser output power                        :  0.3110 mW / -5.07 dBm
        Module temperature                        :  32 degrees C / 89 degrees F
        Module voltage                            :  3.2870 V
        Receiver signal average optical power     :  0.2748 mW / -5.61 dBm

    This is the config and show commands:

    EX4550:

    show interfaces ge-0/0/17
    unit 0 {
        family inet {
            address 1.1.1.1/30;
        }
    }

    show interfaces ge-0/0/17
    Physical interface: ge-0/0/17, Enabled, Physical link is Up
      Interface index: 137, SNMP ifIndex: 516
      Link-level type: Ethernet, MTU: 1514, Speed: 1000mbps, Duplex: Full-Duplex,

      BPDU Error: None, MAC-REWRITE Error: None, Loopback: Disabled,
      Source filtering: Disabled, Flow control: Enabled, Auto-negotiation: Enabled,

    MX5:

    show interfaces ge-1/1/1
    unit 0 {
        family inet {
            address 1.1.1.2/30;
        }
    }

    show interfaces ge-1/1/1
    Physical interface: ge-1/1/1, Enabled, Physical link is Down
      Interface index: 151, SNMP ifIndex: 527
      Link-level type: Ethernet, MTU: 1514, Speed: 1000mbps, BPDU Error: None,
      MAC-REWRITE Error: None, Loopback: Disabled, Source filtering: Disabled,
      Flow control: Enabled, Auto-negotiation: Enabled, Remote fault: Online

    I've messed around with setting VLAN tagging to 0 etc, but still nothing. Also, just so that you know i'm not totally daft - disabling the interface on the MX5 takes down the interface on the EX4550.

    So what am i missing??

    Thanks,

    Andre

    Hello,

    Did You insert compatible SFPs into EX4550 and MX5? Both must be SX or LX.

    Check out this guide for compatibility

    HTH

    Thanks
    Alex

    Hi Alex,

    I've got SFP-SX on both sides. i should mention that i have another MX5 and EX4550 and they're all full messhed. it's just the MX5 to EX4550 connections that are unhappy. 😞

    and i fixed it ...

    i upgraded from Junos 12.2R1.9 to 12.2R4.5.

    i confirmed this by just reloading the sister switch with no upgrade, and the MX5 ports connected to it are still down. after an upgrade on the second switch, the interfaces came up.
