  • 1.  License cost for Layer 3 on an EX-2200

    Posted 08-18-2015 12:07

I decided to do some price checking on used Juniper equipment, and they were pretty nuts!

    Used MX5 router - $8000

    Used QFX-3500 - $35,000 (!!!)   (I could by 14 Arista 7100 switches for that!)

The used EX-2200 was an almost reasonable $400, but I was told that "it would require an expensive license to enable layer 3"

How expensive a license are we talking about?  I've bought multilayer Cisco 3550s for $40/each, and they didn't require any type of license to do L2/L3.

Huh. Wonder why that guy at the reseller told me that?

So how much would an EX-24-EFL license run?

I'm trying to self-learn how to use Juniper switches and routers, and while I'd love to have a VM (ala the vSRX trial) to use with GNS3, I could swing the $400 they quoted me for an EX2200 switch, provided the license isn't too much.

List is $2000, so figure $1000 with discounts.

O_o    Wow, that's more than double the price of the used switch itself!   That's nutterbutters!

If you are just using this to lab then most L3 features will just nag via syslog/log messages and a yellow system alarm about needing a licence. AFAIK the L3 funtionality will still work.

Look at the EFL feature list, Layer 3 interfaces and base features are enabled by default on the base model it is only these specific advanced features that require the license.  I suspect your reseller is mistaken.

For Juniper Networks EX2200 Ethernet Switches, the following features can be added to basic Junos OS by installing an enhanced feature license (EFL):

    • Bidirectional forwarding detection (BFD)
    • Connectivity fault management (IEEE 802.1ag)
    • IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) version 1 (IGMPv1), IGMPv2, and IGMPv3
    • OSPFv1/v2 (with four active interfaces)
    • Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) dense mode, PIM source-specific mode, PIM sparse mode
    • Q-in-Q tunneling (IEEE 802.1ad)
    • Real-time performance monitoring (RPM)
