OSPF graceful restart between EX4200 VC and Cisco 2811

I'm testing OSPF  graceful restart between a VC and Cisco 2811. Everytime i power down the master, OSPF neighbors has to be re-establihed. Bottom line, it's not working as expected. i would think neighbors stay up.. 2811 supports graceful restart in helper mode only. Just wondering if anyone has this working or tested it at all?

Hi,

 

could you please attach your configuration? Do you have any links connected to your master? If Yes then power-off Master would lead to topology change wich in turns would lead to interruption of graceful restart (which is expected).

no links to the router on the master..the config on the ex side just have gracefull restart enabled and cisco it's on by default

did you configure loopback interface or router-id? If not couldcould you please configure it and repeat your test.

yes loopback IP  is configured. Here's the debug from the cisco side when Master is halted using "request system halt member 0" command. This time it looked little better as i did not lose any pings. i did load 9.5.r2 so that might have something to do with it. also i did not power off the master..which is the next thing i'm going to try and see if the debugs look any different

different results when power is turned off..no IETF NSF messages in the debug. doesn't look like VC is send the graceful restart message from the backup RE ..takes abt 10-12 seconds to recover

Hello IOS2JunOS

I'm testing OSPF  graceful restart between a VC and Cisco 2811. Everytime i power down the master, OSPF neighbors has to be re-establihed. Bottom line, it's not working as expected. i would think neighbors stay up.. 2811 supports graceful restart in helper mode only


 

I've not played with EX switches nor even tested OSPF GR on JunOS, but ... based on the logs (and my old tests on Cisco) I assume the OSPF GR works as expected. Please notice:

 

 

  • your first log (after "request system halt member 0") from Cisco shows OSPF states  EXSTART/EXCHANGE/LOADING/FULL - it's expected due to GR resync. Also, please look at the OSPF LS database, and, as far as remember, the Seq# of LSA from the EX will not change after the graceful restart (no new router LSA for EX, etc).
  • second log ("power is turned off") shows OSPF peers/state going to INIT state - adjacency goes down - it's different from OSPF GR
 
From my old Cisco logs from GR testing (results of 'router ospf / log-adjacency-changes detail'):

Do you see the difference in OSPF adjacency transitions for GR/non-GR scenarios ? You may disable OSPF NSF/GR on Cisco 2811 and repeat the testing to see the difference in adjacency transitions.
