After the summer break, it's good to be getting back out on the circuit; October is a busy month for trade shows and conferences in Europe!

On October 16-17 Juniper will be supporting our UK partners1 Alternative Networks and Network Utilities at IP Expo in London. We have a number of speakers2 representing Juniper;  I'll be talking in the Data Centre theatre about Application Driven Data Centres.

So what do I mean by that?

Is one mark of a genius how their work stands the test of time, how it remains relevant, and how we continue to draw inspiration from it? I was reminded of this theory during Broadband World Forum 2012 (#BBWF) as I enjoyed talking to a broad range of people from across our industry. Despite the amazing technology on show (take a look at MX is the Future to get a flavour of what I mean) it was a conversation about the changing nature of relationships that caught my imagination.

I was talking to IBM’s Craig Campbell who is someone at the centre of such change; a change that challenges the historic buyer–vendor relationship; a change that does not recognise traditional boundaries and, whilst there remains a contractual element, it’s a change built on common interest, trust, respect, and shared goals. But the really interesting thing for me is what Craig was describing is industry agnostic – it could be applied to great effect no matter what discipline you work in.

From 8th to 10th October, Juniper Networks will be attending Canalys Channel Forum once again in Barcelona, Spain, and I am already on my way to this sunny part of Southern Europe.

I am expecting it to be an excellent event packed with valuable meetings and the forum itself is a great source of trusted insight for channel partners and a perfect platform for updating their market knowledge and understanding of product strategies from vendors. And of course socializing and making valuable contacts and connections with peers is an important element of the event.

Stuart Borgman, SE Director Advanced Tech Team EMEA eloquently closed this year’s New Network Technical Forum (NNTF12), summing up he sent out his appreciation to all the customers, partners and Juniper staff that made the event a great and valuable experience over the past two days. Particular reference was made to the demo area manned by our Systems Engineers, which was buzzing with lots of activity over the past two days, showcasing the crème de la crème of security and networking products on the market.

There was also a very special mention for three people who attained their coveted JNCIE awards, these went to;

#982 Aleksander Taskaev (Netwell, Russia)

#1051 Krasimir Avramski (Smartcom Bulgaria)

#235 Carsten Michel (Xantaro Deutschland)

There are so many highlights for me from this year’s New Network Technical Forum, so here are some of my favourite parts from the event.

So starting with the plenary sessions, these were packed out with fabulous guest speakers who had been flown in from the US...

From SDN to Cloud

The cool and collective Glenn Dasmalchi kicked off the event by talking about Software Defined Networks (SDN), he announced that Juniper will support SDN protocols across the product portfolio. He said we are partnering with others on interoperability, but pointed out that not all players will disrupt themselves architecturally for SDN.

Security and the Role of Deception

David Koretz, a legend in security, took the stage and wooed the audience with Mykonos (this has to be the coolest product in Juniper’s portfolio), he explained that the software breaks the automation of hacking, making it very expensive for hackers to hack websites. Hooray!

Detection by deception is effectively playing the hackers at their own game. Blocking real files and returning a response with a fake file. David said that hackers often run “John the Ripper” to break encryption, but only to come across fake passwords and authentication created by Mykonos, wasting hackers time, but at the same time learning from their actions. This is done by dropping a super cookie on the hackers’ machine to track everything they are doing. Note that this is no ordinary cookie and it recreates if an attempt to remove it is detected, thus finger printing hackers’ devices. How cool is that? Amazing stuff! And what’s more the Mykonos solution complies with recent EU regulations on the use of cookies. Mykonos detects potential threats before a hack starts, enabling a more proactive security management of websites with potential hacks becoming visible.

This will be our second year running the New Network Technical Forum 2012 (NNTF12) event, and we are heading to Budapest, Hungary in Central Europe. Paul Gainham has already eloquently blogged on what to expect from this year’s NNTF12 – it is going to be a fantastic event packed with lots of thought poking content.

So, taking the learnings from last year’s event we’re going to go paperless and more social at NNTF12. To help us get more social and create more engagement with the attendees at this year’s event we’ll be running two Twitter competitions;

  • Top tweeter from NNTF12 – the prize will be awarded to an event attendee who has contributed the most via Twitter by sharing updates on the event. This can include text updates, photographs and videos from the event. Watch out for updates on the event by following #NNTF12.
  • Best Photograph from NNTF12 – the prize will be awarded to an event attendee who has truly captured the essence of NNTF12 in a photograph and shared this via Twitter using the event hashtag; #NNTF12.
