I had the privilege of participating in a panel discussion about 5G Networks and Backhaul at TIA 2014 conference in Dallas. The panel had a well-rounded participation from vendors addressing different parts of mobile networks. As expected there were no violent agreements on this topic, rather it was reaffirmation of a comment made at a session in ITU on the topic of 5G that “5G is like a big elephant in the room where everyone is seeing the different parts of it”.

5G Networks and Backhaul

We are in the midst of major 4G rollouts and more than half of the world population have not even tasted the supersonic LTE networks, yet we see a lot of industry talks on the topic of 5G networks. So let us shine our crystal balls and see what 5G networks are all about all the while addressing some of the burning questions related to this topic.

Building a new mobile backhaul network for tomorrow's needs

If we are serious about the “end-to-end” mobile customer experience then deploying LTE without future-proofing the core, backhaul and security will lead to problems later. In a recent Buyer Case Study, IDC do a great job of highlighting some of the challenges faced by mobile operators as they move to all-IP networks. They also take us through how one operator managed this transition. I touch on some of the key points in this blog but I also point you to where you can download the IDC paper for free.

Mohammed Khan loves mobile backhaul and he wants you to love mobile backhaul too. He feels it’s often overlooked as the whole LTE debate becomes centred on SDN and virtualization in the datacenter and evolved packet core. But Mohammed argues that backhaul is vital to the user experience. And, if you get it right, it will make you money and save you money. This blog captures some of the thoughts Mohammed shared with an audience at LTE World Summit and there’s a link so you can see Mohammed in action delivering his 20 minute presentation.
