NFV - All Change for Speeds and Feeds

by Juniper Employee ‎10-31-2014 08:08 AM - edited ‎11-10-2014 08:10 AM

Speeds and feeds has been the mantra for as long as I can remember but is all that about to change? In my view the answer is no. As NFV discussions, trials and implementations gather pace speeds and feed will continue to hold their place in our psyche but not as you know it. I explore the new direction for speeds and feeds in this blog.

As a child I remember stories about James Watt watching a kettle boil and being inspired to develop the Steam Engine. Engineers have often developed technologies based on inspiration derived from what they personally experience in life.

I think I must have been an engineer from birth, it was in my DNA. I too was inspired by the wonders all around me, how things worked and how from analyzing the detail I could derive a template for innovative thought in other areas.

The Internet today is a fantastic repository for human knowledge; it is spanning intelligence, leveling geographies, it is a communication network extending sensory perception beyond distance and time for both audio and video.

The elements of the Internet; network, compute and storage resources, come together to create a platform for innovation second to none. The innovation of artists of all kind, musicians, writers, film makers and many more flows through this infrastructure like the blood in our veins.

I'm blogging live from Broadband World Forum where there is a lot going on. What's catching my interest this year is a sense of renewed optimism by network operators that the network has the potential to become an intelligent asset and this gives rise to new service and revenue opportunities. I dropped into one panel session that tackled this head on and my take-aways are below.

Is your Organization Structured to Make the Most of SDN and NFV?

by Juniper Employee ‎10-17-2013 12:49 AM - edited ‎10-17-2013 02:45 AM

SDN and NFV have got technologists involved in some pretty heavy debates; for example is it hype or will it enable service providers to develop new business models? But one area of discussion stretches beyond the boundaries of technologists. Will SDN/NFV change the organizational structure of service providers? I caught up with Brian Levy and David Noguer Bau and asked them to share some of the discussions they’ve been having with service providers.
