Orange County’s South Coast Plaza Rings up Reliable Wi-Fi on Black Friday

By Mark Tyre

Hordes of well-dressed, savvy shoppers descended on Orange County’s South Coast Plaza on a rainy Black Friday last month. Some slept in tents in the parking lot, while others got out of their warm beds before the crack of dawn to head to the mall, bleary-eyed, gripping cups of coffee, eager to find the biggest bargains. With more than 250 shops, South Coast Plaza is the largest mall on the West Coast and home to retailers ranging from Abercrombie & Fitch, Nordstrom, and Sephora to Burberry, Cartier, and Hermes.

With Wi-Fi available in the mall, shoppers could post their Black Friday bargains to their Facebook and Instagram feeds.  They could Snapchat selfies from their dressing rooms to their BFFs. They could check the mall directory for the locations of seasonal stores like Brookstone. And they could use their smartphones to quickly compare prices at other stores and online shops to see if the doorbuster deals were truly “deals.”

As South Coast Plaza and other retailers have seen, offering free Wi-Fi attracts shoppers, enticing them to stay longer—and purchase more. Delivering Wi-Fi to crowds of people is challenging under even the best conditions, but under the outlier network traffic volumes on Black Friday, South Coast Plaza’s Wi-Fi hummed along beautifully, enabling more than 1,200 shoppers to text, share pictures, research products and prices, and even dash off occasional emails with nary a hiccup.

South Coast Plaza relies on a unified wired and wireless network from Juniper Networks. A Juniper EX4550 Ethernet Switch serves as the 10GbE network core, while the Juniper EX3300 Ethernet Switch provides access network connectivity across the shopping center’s three stories. In addition, a pair of Juniper SRX240 Services Gateways provides high-performance security, routing, and networking as well as content filtering.

The Wi-Fi is pervasive. South Coast Plaza has more than 100 Juniper WLA532 802.11n access points, providing the wireless coverage and capacity that Orange County’s highly discerning shoppers demand. The WLA532 APs deliver seamless mobility and scalable performance to support data, voice, and video applications. Back in the data center, a Juniper WLC8800 Wireless LAN Controller enables the Wi-Fi network to integrate with the mall’s wired infrastructure. The IT staff used Juniper’s RingMaster software to plan, configure and deploy the 802.11n wireless network, and continues to use RingMaster to monitor and optimize the WLAN today.

How Star Trek is your enterprise?

by Juniper Employee on ‎09-23-2013 05:00 PM

How Star Trek is Your EnterpriseThe Starship Enterprise had all the communications technology needed to support its mission—mobile communicators, videoconferencing, even presence. Today's enterprises need many of the same tools to help them achieve their missions. Global workforces, mobility and e-commerce all demand excellent communication between customers, partners and employees.

Recent data from Sophos Labs shows that the average person carries three devices: a smartphone (85%), laptop (65%) and a tablet (48%). While each device is able to quickly access and relay information, the way they connect to the network is different and will depend largely on the device itself.

Juniper delivers comprehensive, integrated, resilient and secure wireless LAN solutions. And this year, Juniper debuted in the Network World 2013 Wi-Fi Challenge and demonstrated its compelling Wi-Fi offerings. Participating wireless LAN vendors were asked to submit an exposé that highlights their strengths and points of differentiation as well as engage in a webcast to explain how they solve key wireless challenges.

Where Is My Controller And Do I Need To Care?

Until now, wireless LAN deployments have left little to the imagination.  You could always find your WLAN controller appliances sitting behind access points, dutifully configuring and monitoring them while enforcing policies related to radio resource management, authentication, traffic filtering and prioritization.  A WLAN controller has always required at least 1 RU of precious rack real estate and its own power source.  Most importantly, it also consumes additional IT resources, since it is yet another device that needs to be maintained and managed.
