Primary Vs Preferred

what is the difference between using the flag "Primary" and "Preferred" for an interface that has multiple ip addresses ?

couldn't find a clear information about that.

In Layman's terms,

Preferred address -  when destined to same subnet

Primary adddress - when destined to different subnet
