    Hi

I am really confused about those physical part names. Can anyone explain it in detail?  DPC, FPC, MPC, PIM, PIC, MIC?

    Thanks,

    Bo

    Hello,

    I'll take a stab.

Assuming we are talking about physical assets ("physical" in this context means "you can touch it"):

DPC - Dense Port Concentrator, ICHIP-based Ethernet line card for MX240/480/960 or Services card (called MS-DPC) for MX240/480/960

FPC - Flexible PIC Concentrator, line card for M/T-series/MX240/480/960. Can have interface (sub)cards (also called PICs) inserted in it.

MPC - Modular Port Concentrator, Trio chipset-based line card for MX240/480/960. Can have interface cards (also called MICs) inserted in it.

PIM - Physical Interface Module, interface card for J-series and SRX-series boxes

PIC - physical Interface Card, interface card for M/T-series/MX240/480/960 boxes

MIC - modular Interface Card, interface card for MX5/10/40/80/240/480/960.

    HTH

    Thanks

    Alex

What I read in the MX960 hardware guide is that:

fpc—Slot in which the DPC is installed. On the MX960 router, the DPCs are represented
in the CLI as FPC 0 through FPC 11.

fpc—Slot in which the MPC is installed. On the MX960 router, the MPCs are represented
in the CLI as FPC 0 through FPC 11.

fpc—Lowest slot number in which the FPC is installed. On the MX960 router, the FPCs
occupy two slots and are represented in the CLI as FPC 0 through FPC 10.

Probably a silly question, but,  _why_ are DPC, MPC and FPC cards all represented as FPC on the MX960? What I got a bit confused about is why 3 different types of cards are all represented in the CLI as FPC in the MX960.. Is this an historical thing, because this way you can access them in a similar way, or something else?

FPC is Flexible PIC Concentrator houses one or multiple PICs (Physical Interface Cards).DPC and MPC are the type of FPCs/Linecards.
