One Analyst’s View: SDN is Imperative for Network Service Providers

by aravichandran ‎06-07-2013 09:18 AM - edited ‎06-07-2013 09:19 AM

According to the title of Glen Hunt’s recent report for Current Analysis, SDN is an “imperative” for network service providers. That is a pretty strong statement. And that’s why I like the report.

Since we announced our 6-4-1 SDN vision and strategy, Juniper has been getting a tremendous amount of positive feedback from press, analysts, our employees—and most importantly—from our customers. This week a lot of the attention was focused on an announcement not by Juniper, but by Sonus Networks—one of our technology alliance partners.

The Importance of Listening to Customers in Times of Disruption

IMG_1940.jpegThe American playwright Wilson Mizner once said, “A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while he knows something.” Those in the business world talk a lot about the value of listening and with a disruptive trend like software defined networking (SDN), there has never been a more important time for Juniper to stay in tune with our customers.

With Aruna Ravichandran from Juniper and Dianne Bissoon from LIME

As you are likely aware if you are reading this blog, today Juniper introduced a whole bunch of new software products and related hardware. I won’t recap that here since it’s covered well in the press release but I did want to highlight one of our customers whose support has been absolutely critical for our launch. That’s why I invited Dianne Bissoon from LIME to co-author this blog with me.

Mobile, cloud and video. Three megatrends that are having a significant impact on service provider networks. Each one of these trends represents a shift in behavior, and a shift in the way content, data and applications are used and consumed.

The network plays a fundamental role in all three. Without the network, you couldn’t access your cloud services, download an app on your mobile phone or watch a video on your tablet. Yet network service providers are in the early phases of determining how to optimize their networks for the delivery of mobile, cloud and video; and also how they can monetize this shift with innovative new services.

Today Juniper introduced several new applications and products designed to help our customers achieve both goals: monetization and optimization. And the new applications and products we are announcing are applicable to all service providers, regardless if you are serving residential customers or businesses, or both.
