Education at Juniper
From its founding, Juniper Networks has done things differently from other networking vendors. It is fitting that its customer education programs should be no different.
Other vendors allow "professional instructional designers" or "technical writers" to write their training classes. These folks specialize in taking information from engineers who are subject-matter experts (SMEs) and developing training or documentation suitable for end-users from that material.
At Juniper, the folks who write our training classes are the SMEs. Juniper's training department employees a rare breed of engineers who are both experts in the field of networking and also good at writing training classes.
On our team, we have two former JTAC employees, a former resident engineer (RE), and two former Juniper instructors. Personally, I have experience doing network engineering for a large enterprise, a regional ISP, and an application service provider (ASP). The deep experience we have on our team allows us to teach our customers not only about JUNOS , but also how to use it.
When we prepare to write training about a new product or feature, we start by using the product. We configure it and integrate it into a test network just as we expect customers will integrate it into their network. And, we configure the same sorts of things that we expect customers to configure. This lets us not just determine how to use a new product or feature in isolation, but allows us to examine interactions with other products/features. Then, we build a training class around this experience: a training class that does not just enable you to configure knobs, but rather one that really teaches you how to use these products in your network.
The exams in the Juniper Networks Technical Certification Program are built around this same knowledge base. These exams aim to test real-world use of our products, rather than mere knowledge of configuration options.
