Why Operate – when you can Automate?

by Juniper Employee on 09-17-2009 12:30 PM - last edited on 11-05-2009 01:59 PM by Administrator Administrator

60 to 80% of IT work is repetitive. In challenging economic times, every business has a mandate to do more with less. Greater scale and lower operating cost are forces driving in opposite direction. How are you managing the demands for greater scale and enhanced functionality that introduce new complexity in your network?

I recently sat down with Jeff Mattan to discuss JUNOS and its built-in, powerful, yet flexible, tool sets for automation. Customers are embracing JUNOS to automate and simplify the configuration and operation of their networks. Watch our discussion and then check out the newly available JUNOS as a Scripting Language eLearning course.

Back to Basics

by Juniper Employee on 09-15-2009 11:21 AM

As best as I reckon, for nearly a year, industry and economic pundits alike have been theorizing over the changes in how organizations do business or need to plan their business for the future given the recession we have had to endure. There is virtually no industry or geographic region that has been untouched by this phenomenon. These experts have created catchphrases such as "flat is the new up". Much as we saw during the recession in the early 1990's companies are "right sizing", "redeploying" and "refocusing" resources all in the attempt of being able to best ride out the economic storm and come out ahead. I wouldn't say I was startled when first briefed by customers on their 100GE requirements in early 2006, because I knew the topic was on the agenda-but I was given pause by the perceived urgency of it. In core routing, we are used to traffic growth rates of 70-80%, and a network architect planning for this kind of growth has to consider all kinds of tools to cope with this possibility. As the mobile “r”evolution hurtles with warp speed and takes all of us with it for the joy ride, it is imperative that we step back and observe the various trends that are contributing and causing this phenomenal pace of change. Now Shipping: The EX8216

by Juniper Employee on 05-13-2009 01:55 PM - last edited on 08-06-2009 04:05 PM by Administrator Administrator

Juniper Networks started shipping the EX8216 on May 1, 2009, one quarter after the launch of the EX8208. Releasing two such large-scale projects back-to-back would not have been possible without the extraordinary dedication of our engineering team, and I’d like to take a moment to recognize their accomplishments. Doubling the EX8208’s density was not a trivial exercise; everything from the ASICs to power and cooling needed to be planned in advance, while systems and software had to be designed, built and tested in parallel. One advantage of this approach was that any issue found on one platform could be fixed on the other at the same time, and the EX8208 backplane and EX8216 midplane could provide identical interfaces to the EX8200 line cards. As a result, when we first powered up the EX8216 early last year, it just worked.

Virtualization is a powerful tool with many applications: data center consolidation, desktop virtualization, etc. However, people often don't consider the security implications of virtualization. Virtualization can make you more secure or less. To learn more about how this works and what you can do about it, watch this video or come see my talk at CSI SX.

You can call it Fred – it’s still a firewall!

by Juniper Employee on 05-11-2009 12:07 PM - last edited on 05-28-2009 06:36 PM

The idea that the firewall is dead is, well, hogwash. It might not be your father’s firewall but, believe me, firewalls are not going away. Some vendors in the industry are claiming the firewall’s dead. And if your definition of a firewall hinges on a set of features that were originally offered in the first firewalls in the late ‘80s then I suppose you might be right. But by the same reasoning you probably think we should’ve renamed the “automobile” when distributors gave way to electronic ignition systems (yes, this is a geeky guy reference). Read more...

MPLS too expensive? Strategies to bring costs in line.

by Juniper Employee on 05-04-2009 05:00 AM - last edited on 05-28-2009 06:29 PM

Last week I spent some time chatting with one of our favorite analyst firms about the future of the WAN. He's seeing many of the same things in the industry today as we are. Demands on the WAN are getting, well, pretty demanding! And enterprises are adopting a few specific strategies to cope. One strategy is the use of MPLS-based managed services to ensure private, low-latency traffic delivery. These services are great - they do what they're supposed to do and they're not too tough to use. The service provider pretty much takes care of everything. Read more...
