  • 1.  HA deployment with two MX104 routers

    Posted 12-06-2016 23:28

We are an class B ISP , we are using an MX104 router in our network as a Gateway . We have planned for a HA deployment with adding one more MX104 router . For this solution we have got two EX3300 switches as WAN switches to terminate the ISP links and share it to both the routers . We are new to the HA deployments, Anyone please help with the configuration guidance on how to achieve the HA . Herewith i have attached the network diagram and MX104 current configuration . The network diagram was initially given by our system Integrator.

    Note :

    1) ISP's has given only /30 IP's for their connectivity , we cannot get more IP's from them .

    2) The lan network has multiple /30 IP's provisioned for customers.

    3) Achieving VRRP is not possible due to IP address limitation.

    4) Both routers are having two 10G interface licenses

Please help us with a detailed guidance on how to achieve the HA.

    Thanks & Regards

    Hi,

Any logic why the ISP/peering links are not terminating directly on the MX routers?

For the ISP connectivity, eBGP peering with the ISPs would be suitable.

If the ISP links are connected directly on the MX, any link failure woud bring the BGP session down instantly, whereas with the switch the BGP teardown would rely on  hold-down timer [default 90s] to teardown the BGP session and withdraw the routes. This has potential of blackholing traffic for 90s.

For the LAN side, possible options are:

    1. Independent chassis and VRRP

requires at least /29 ip addressing

    2. MC-LAG

Active-Active : requires irb and vrrp

Active-standby : May still require irb and vrrp

    3. Virtual-chassis

nfortunately, seems not supported on MX104:

    Dear Ashwin,

The WAN links has been connected in the switch just to split connectivity for both routers . The eBGP peering is done in MX104 router only.

For HA you may also want to consider upgrading to the 14.1 or higher so you can support ISSU for future upgrades.
