invalid PFE error messages

Guys,

I'm seeing this error message on a few of our Juniper routers (J4350 & MX240's) and not sure whether it's more informational or a darker symptom, any help or advice would be appreciated.

/kernel: vlan: invalid PFE queue counter pairs to copy, src 0xc3b3a000, dst 0x0     kern     crit

Regards

Pete

Re: invalid PFE error messages

Hi Guy

I have made some researchs on my routers and have found the same error messages  a long time ago (an old message.8.gz file) in an J4350:

Dec  5 17:38:37   /kernel: vlan: invalid PFE queue counter pairs to copy, src 0xc3c27800, dst 0x0

And this message has not reapeared from the time I upgraded from 9.2R1.10 to 9.3R1.7 (today I am running 8.5R4.3) :

Dec 10 22:26:37   /kernel: vlan: invalid PFE queue counter pairs to copy, src 0xc3c27800, dst 0x0
Dec 10 22:50:37   /kernel: vlan: invalid PFE queue counter pairs to copy, src 0xc3c27800, dst 0x0
Dec 10 23:14:37   /kernel: vlan: invalid PFE queue counter pairs to copy, src 0xc3c27800, dst 0x0
Dec 10 23:26:41  J4350 /kernel: vlan: invalid PFE queue counter pairs to copy, src 0xc3c27800, dst 0x0
Dec 10 23:38:37  J4350 /kernel: vlan: invalid PFE queue counter pairs to copy, src 0xc3c27800, dst 0x0

So I would simply advise you to upgrade to a new version in case you are running V9.2R1.10

Re: invalid PFE error messages

thanks for the information, we are in fact using 9.2R2.15. What version are you now using?

Re: invalid PFE error messages

Hi Guy

You're certainly wondering why I am now in 8.5 and not a new 9.x

That's because this is a lab Router on which I am testing our customer's Version.

In fact I have run several different versions on this router and I have only seen the same message as you when it was running V9.2R1.10.

Re: invalid PFE error messages

Hi PeteW,

It seems you have either 'kernel any' or 'any any' in your syslog configuration, thus seeing this debug level messages.

In this particular line, PFE is basically reporting the result of a sanity check while processing the queue counters. This doesn't necessarily point to an operational problem and may simply be due to some inconsistency/unsupported feature in your class-of-service configuration (e.g. use of a wildcard, attempting to apply cos on a non-supported interface)

Would you mind giving some info with regards to your class-of-service section?

 Cheers,

 Erdem

Re: invalid PFE error messages

I have done a search and can confirm that this is a cosmetic problem. It is due to extra functionality that was added in JUNOS 9.2. JUNOS versions 9.2R3, 9.3R3 and 9.4R1and above contain the fix.
