The irb interface is a layer3 interface, so i suppose will show you only the broadcast, multicast and unicast packets that should be processed by the router. If you want to see Layer 2 traffic as STP, i suppose you will have to configure traceoptions under stp configuration.
If you configure sampling, or port mirroring on both interface and compare results, i pretty sure this will be the difference.
