  • 1.  Can a 3400 upgrade directly from 9.4 to 11.4 via boot loader?

    Posted 09-12-2013 05:02

We have a 3400 in a lab, so it doesn't have a configuration on it that we care about.  When I tried to upgrade the 9.4 code on it to 11.4 it said:

WARNING: Package junos-11.4R7.5-domestic is not compatible with this hardware.
WARNING: Please install a package with version 7.4 or higher.

I think this means we need to upgrade in steps, which sound too tedious, and I can't find any 9.6 code anyway.  I'm wondering if I can boot into the loader, upgrade directly to 11.4, then upgrade the boot loader.  Or is there something else that the 9.4 > 9.6 > 10.4 > 11.4 process does to the box?

Are You certain You have downloaded the correct JUNOS package?

The JUNOS 11.4 install package for SRX3400 has a filename starting with "junos-srx1k3k-11.4", not "junos-11.4"

    HTH

    Thanks

Yes, I have the srx package.  The actual session looks like this:

    root@% mkdir /var/tmp/usb
    root@% mount -t msdos /dev/da0s1 /var/tmp/usb
    root@% ls /var/tmp/usb
    junos-srx1k3k-11.4R7.5-domestic.tgz
    root@% cli
    root> ... add /var/tmp/usb/junos-srx1k3k-11.4R7.5-domestic.tgz
WARNING: Package junos-11.4R7.5-domestic is not compatible with this hardware.
WARNING: Please install a package with version 7.4 or higher.

You cannot upgrade from 9.4 to 11.4 as the former is not an EEOL release.  The fastest method to perform the upgrade may to first ask JTAC for 9.3 (which is EEOL) which can be upgraded to 11.4.  Keep in mind that you'll need to install a new bootloader for anything above 10.x due to the dual-root partitioning.  That may also be the reason for the hardware error.

Thanks for the tip and the URL.  I'll get on to the JTAC.
