SRX Series Image Upgrade Using a USB Device

Where can I found the file 'autoinstall.conf' to upgrade SRX devices via USB?
This feature is available on Junos 10.4.

I don't have anything meaningful to contribute, but, if this is anything like autoplay on Windows we had better watch out! :smileywink:

Re: SRX Series Image Upgrade Using a USB Device

I too am trying to find instructions on how to create / format / obtain the "autoinstall.conf" to be able to use this new feature mentioned in the 10.4  Release Notes.

Anyone figured out how to do this succesfully ?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

SRX Series Image Upgrade Using a USB Device

This feature is supported on SRX100, SRX210, SRX220, SRX240, and SRX650 devices.
The SRX Series Image Upgrade using a USB device feature simplifies the upgrading of
Junos OS images in cases where there is no console access to an SRX Series device
located at a remote site. This feature allows you to upgrade the Junos OS image with
minimum configuration effort by simply inserting a USB flash drive into the USB port
of the SRX Series device and performing a few simple steps.

NOTE: USB upgrades are not supported on chassis clusters.

Before you begin the installation, ensure the following prerequisites are met:
• Junos OS upgrade image and autoinstall.conf file are copied to the USB device.
• Adequate space is available on the SRX Series device to install the software image.
To use a USB flash drive to install the Junos OS image on an SRX Series device:
1.
Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port of the SRX Series device and wait for
the LEDs to blink amber, then steadily light amber, indicating that the SRX Series
device detects the Junos OS image.
If the LEDs do not turn amber, press the Power button or power-cycle the device
and wait for the LEDs to steadily light amber.
2. Press the Reset Config button on the SRX Series device and wait for the LEDs to
turn green, indicating that the Junos OS upgrade image has successfully installed.
If the USB device is plugged in, the Reset Config button always performs as an
image upgrade button. Any other functionality of this button is overridden until you
remove the USB flash drive.
3. Remove the USB flash drive. The SRX Series device restarts automatically and
loads the new Junos OS version

NOTE: If an installation error occurs, the LEDs light red, which might indicate
that the Junos OS image on the USB flash drive is corrupted. An installation
error can also occur if the current configuration on the SRX Series device
is not compatible with the new Junos OS version on the USB. You must
have console access to the SRX Series device to troubleshoot an installation
error.

Re: SRX Series Image Upgrade Using a USB Device

I couldn't find the docs as well, but it really doesn't matter until another 10.4r release or 11.1 comes out.. To USE the NEW features the firewall would already need to be running 10.4 or better.

So there isn't anything to upgrade to yet.

But yes I would still like to know what goes in that file.

Re: SRX Series Image Upgrade Using a USB Device

Hello,

Please create an empty autoinstall.conf file on the USB stick with image

If you are planning to upgrade or downgrade the JUNOS image please follow these steps.
1. Create an Auto Install USB key by copying the “two” files below into the USB:
• An “autoinstall.conf” file -This empty file indicates to the system that the USB key is
Auto Install USB key
• JUNOS package to which you want to upgrade/downgrade
2. Once the Key is ready, insert it into the SRX device
3. Wait for LEDs to glow in static Amber and blink, this indicates that JUNOS recognized the Auto Install USB Key

Re: SRX Series Image Upgrade Using a USB Device

Hello,

Please put the desired configuration in a regular text file named junos-config.conf and copy this text file onto USB key together with SRX image and autoinstall.conf empty file.

The configuration format should be same as displayed in "show configuration" printout.

Configuration in "set" format is not supported.

This configuration will be committed during autoinstallation process.

JUNOS 10.4 is required.

HTH

Regards

Alex
