I need to perform an Upgrade via ISSU from 11.4R9.4 / 11.4R10.3 to 12.1X46-D65.

As far as I can tell a direct ISSU will work without intermediate Versions, correct?

 

I found the following "nice to know" Note:

A problem is known in SRX 240 B2 and H2 model numbers if you are upgrading to 11.4R10 or higher JunOS version from 11.4R7/R8/R9. The Update will fail with the error "Please install a package with version 11.4R5 or Higher

 

An upgrade from Junos Release 11.4R7/R8/R9 to Junos Releases 12.1X45, and 12.1X46 is not affected by this issue and will work as expected.

 

Has anyone ever done an upgrade from 11.4 to 12.1X46 via ISSU?

ISSU on 11.4 is not supported if you have any of the config specified below.

MGCP, SCCP, VPN, Logging, IDP, AppSecure, NTP, PCAP, Port Mirroring, GRE/IPIP, Multicast, SNMP, Interface Monitoring, LACP, LAG, JFLOW, GPRS/GTP/SCTP

You can deactivate/delete these features and try upgrading. On my personal experience , many ISSU failures occurred with 11.4 ISSU and recommendation would be to use minimal downtime upgrade as in KB17947 (https://kb.juniper.net/KB17947)

Regarding upgrade from 11.4 to 12.1X46, you can upgrade directly as they both are EEOL releases.

If I read it correctly (using R9 and R10 from the 11.4 train) I am limited in ISSU if I have any of the following configs / functions:

 

11.4R5+

VPN, GRE/IPIP, Multicast, JFLOW, GPRS/GTP/SCTP

 

correct?

 

Thank you for your personal experience - I will use the minimal downtime method as described.

That’s correct. 11.4R9 gets following limitations only "VPN, GRE/IPIP, Multicast, JFLOW, GPRS/GTP/SCTP"
