On the default settings of SRX100 and 210 I see:

set security zones security-zone untrust interfaces fe-0/0/0.0 host-inbound-traffic system-services tftp

I'm curious why tftp was added and what's it for and is it necessary for a dynamic ip address cable internet setup.

tftp is a protocol to deliver "software images" or configs by a kind of udp like ftp! Cisco devices used it in the past and still can use it!

dynamic address asignment by a cable provider is done by dhcp. You have to enable system-services dhcp

and put dhcp "client" on the interface connected towards the cable provider
