  • 1.  SRX100H Cluster - Fails to upgrade to 12.1x47 (from 12.1x46)

    Posted 08-31-2014 11:04

    Hi Guys,

as a newcomer I want to introduce myself:

I am a Dutch/German engineer with an extensive background in everything Cisco, and used to be an absolute IOS buff. When I switched jobs in februari this year, I got my hands on Junos and instantly fell in love with the OS and the product line. So much, that I've invested most of my spare time in order to progress through the JNCIP training program... and I love it.

    Now to my problem:

In my home lab I am running two SRX100Hs as a chassis-cluster, both running 12.1X46-D20.5 since it was released without any major complications. My attention was caught by the recently released 12.1x47 release of Junos for the branch SRX appliances and it's pretty extensive new feature set. So I wanted to give the new firmware a spin and tried to upgrade the two units... the result is as follows:

    ISSU: Validating package
WARNING: in-service-upgrade shall reboot both the nodes
in your cluster. Please ignore any subsequent
    reboot request message

    Installation failed for package '/altroot/cf/packages/install-tmp/junos-12.1X47-D10.4-domestic'
error: ISSU: failed to upgrade node1

I've read through all the documentation, but the release notes only mention that the low memory branch appliances aren't supported in this release. As I am running both units in high memory... I wonder why the upgrade fails.

Nowhere is it mentioned that the SRX100H isn't supported.

Anyone else bumped his/her head against this?

    Regards,

    Gereon

Just to mention it in addition to this post:

I've tried to upgrade without using ISSU.

Basically 12.1X47 only supports the H2 models, so the newer versions with 2GB ram. The docs are not very clear on that.

    I wrote about it here:

    http://michaeldale.com.au/archive/2014/08/23/junos-121x47-first-gen-srx-devices-are-no-longer-supported/

I did manage to trick 12.1X47 installing on even a SRX100B! But it was very slow.

Many thanks for your reply... this is quite a bummer.

I will see if your hack is also functional on the 100H series.... any chance that the RAM is customer serviceable on the 100 series?

Many thanks for sharing this, top notch information!

It probably will work on the 100H, shouldn't run too badly unless you use UTM.

The SRX100, 210 and 220 have fixed memory and cannot be upgraded 😞

I will try and apply the workaround that you applied in the firmware hack, and quote out the requirement checks. Let's see if how the SRX100H is going to handle this OS 🙂

Will not upgrade remotely, but will do it as soon as I am home and let you know what the outcome will be 🙂

    Again, many thanks!

Unfortunatly, the 100H fails during upgrade 😞

Still, it was worth a try.

    What error are you getting?

    "Unable to validate system image"

I've tried to generate new hashes for the archive... but even that didn't help out.
