SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

Dear J-community,

We are about to migrate from an 5600 cluster to a 4200 based cluster. I have a few questions regarding dedicated HA ports :

- Can I bring up both HA ports to provide control-links redundancy ? If so, anything special to buy / activate / configure ?

- Although our beloved vendor won't officially support it, do you know if those accept ZR transceivers ? by extension DWDM transceivers ?

Thank you for your feedbacks.

Re: SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

I am not seeing an option for redundancy on HA links for the SRX4200.

You might find this configuration generator helpful.

http://www.juniper.net/support/tools/srxha/

and the design guide

https://kb.juniper.net/library/CUSTOMERSERVICE/GLOBAL_JTAC/NT260/SRX_HA_Deployment_Guide.pdf

On optics, I've used Champion 3rd party optics for both standard SM/MM and CWDM deploys without any issues on our Juniper gear.

Re: SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

Dear Steeve,

Thank your for the initial feedbacks.

"I am not seeing an option for redundancy on HA links for the SRX4200." : hence my question, I can't find any documentation entry specific to this point. I think I might have to confirm this with our SE.

"On optics, I've used Champion 3rd party optics for both standard SM/MM and CWDM deploys without any issues on our Juniper gear." : question was specificaly about DWDM and SRX. Any experience regarding this particular combo ?

Best regards.

Re: SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

Hello,

Regarding chassis cluster dual controls links, it's not supported on SRX4200 :

http://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/topics/concept/chassis-cluster-dual-control-link-un...

"Note: Dual control link functionality is not supported on SRX4100 and SRX4200 devices."

http://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/topics/task/operational/chassis-cluster-srx-series-...

That's too bad. Now, I'm only left with DWDM transceivers support.

Best regards.

Re: SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

We do all our DWDM tuning in that separate system and inject with standard frequencies so no direct experience.

But have used 4 different vendor optics without issue on the SRX and as long as the port speed is supported have not had issues.  I would say there is a good chance this will work.

Re: SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

Dear Steeve,

That's the thing, Juniper policy about transceivers in general / wdm in particular is very blury, that's the least to say.

And then, there is the fact that JTAC might not help us in case they detect 3rd party DWDM transceivers SRX platform in particular. But hey, that's a whole other story. Let's not feed the sleeping troll ;-)

Here is the most up-to-date supported transceivers list for SRX4200 :

https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/release-independent/junos/topics/reference/specification...

No mention of ZR grade transceivers. Well, I guess I'll end up trying that on the filed.

Thank you for your help.

Re: SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

"If you are having a problem running a Juniper Networks device that is using a third-party optic or cable, the Juniper Networks Technical Assistance Center (JTAC) can help you diagnose the source of the problem. Your JTAC engineer might recommend that you check the third-party optic or cable and potentially replace it with an equivalent Juniper Networks optic or cable that is qualified for the device."

You can get help. Juniper is a lot more accomodative of supporting 3rd party products especially when they help the functionality of their devices.

Re: SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

I know. I was responding to a comment that Juniper may not provide support if they detect third party..et...etc.

But this was source from the  QFX and the  EX, so I extrapolated they would not deny similar support for the SRX

Re: SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

I've used almost exclusively 3rd party optics for about 5 years.  Juniper is more than fair in the JTAC center on this particular issue.  You won't find the big C approach of looking for an excuse to close the case because of optics.

But you do need to be diligent up front in checking your layer 1 and optics messages when having performance issues before openting a case.  We make sure all the potential fiber and laser issues are cleared.

Look for incrementing errors on the interface.

Confirm there are not optic alarms in the diagnostics

Clean and replace jumpers

And resolve mtu issues

Once you are sure the link itself is not an issue, I've never had JTAC make any comments about the 3rd party optics.

Re: SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

Ok guys, I get it. Back to the initial thread.

Any experience with tunable DWDM transceivers ? specifically on SRX gear ? even more on HA ports ?

Re: SRX4200 dedicated HA ports

In general, I would trust the optic vendors recommendations on the issue.  And they seem to have a compatibility list here that includes your desired parts.
