  • 1.  WARNING: THIS DEVICE HAS BOOTED FROM THE BACKUP JUNOS IMAGE

    Posted 05-29-2015 09:59

After abrupt the loss of power, we have received the following message on SRX240H:

    --- JUNOS 12.1X44-D45.2 built 2015-01-12 14:20:16 UTC

    ***********************************************************************
    **
**  WARNING: THIS DEVICE HAS BOOTED FROM THE BACKUP JUNOS IMAGE      **
    **                                                                   **
**  It is possible that the primary copy of JUNOS failed to boot up  **
**  properly, and so this device has booted from the backup copy.    **
    **                                                                   **
**  Please re-install JUNOS to recover the primary copy in case      **
**  it has been corrupted.                                           **
    **                                                                   **
    ***********************************************************************

Any advise how to best deal with this warning message?

HOWEVER, after we properly rebooted the system following this message, this message went away.

How do we know if we are still booting from the backup image or not and what is to be done?

    >show system snapshot media internal/compact-flash

This will show from which partition device was booted.

Below URL can give you some more details

The ">show system snapshot media internal" command only shows what is on the partition but NOT from which device was booted. What is the command to see from which the device is actually booted?

    Hi..

If the SRX Series Services Gateway is unable to boot from the primary JUNOS Software image, and boots up from the backup JUNOS Software image in the backup root partition, a message is displayed on the console at the time of login indicating that the device has booted from the backup JUNOS Software image:

Because the system is left with only one functional root partition, you should immediately restore the primary JUNOS Software image.

    • By installing a new image using the CLI or J-Web. The newly installed image will become the primary image, and the device will boot from it on the next reboot.
    • By using a snapshot of the backup root partition using the CLI command
    • #request system snapshot slice alternate
    •  Once the primary root partition is recovered using this method, the device will successfully boot from the primary root partition on the next reboot. After the procedure, the primary root partition will contain the same version of JUNOS as the backup root partition.

Please accept this as a solution, and kudos are always welcome.

    REGARDS

Sorry for that.. Please use "show system storage partitions" as in https://kb.juniper.net/InfoCenter/index?page=content&id=KB23180

This solution applies only the EX.

SRX you will need to do :

    request system snapshot slice altnerate
