The OS difference is pretty huge actually. SSG runs ScreenOS which is an OS developed by former NetScreen. SRX runs JUNOS which has been part of Juniper's existence from day one. Basically JUNOS on SRX is ScreenOS features and functionality on JUNOS. Both have their features that they support which the other does not. But SRX product line in conjunction with current J-Series will eventually expand beyond what is offered on the SSG/ISG/NetScreen product families. Both more or less target the same market - at least that will be the case once all SRX product line is introduced. In fact you can convert SSG520M/550M and 320M/350M into J-Series routers and vice versa with a migration kit. So really the it is a matter of which features you require and then comparing the SSG or SRX platforms to see which product better fits your needs.
My 2 cents
