  • 1.  Does the SSG5 really support DSL?

    Posted 09-15-2009 15:34

The SSG5 manual has a section on setting up a DSL interface.

The example for the GUI is:

Network > Interfaces > Edit (adsl or shdsl interface): Enter the following, then click
    OK:
    Zone Name: Untrust (selected)
    VPI/VCI: 8/35
    Multiplexing Method: LLC (selected)
    RFC1483 Protocol Mode: Bridged (selected)

But on my SSG5, I do not see an option for selecting to edit an ADSL or SHDSL interface.

Perhaps this is available on selected models only?

    How do I tell?

    SSG20 only - not the SSG5 -

The SSG5 does support ADSL there are two options

    1) The SSG5 without ADSL modem built in (you can use an external ADSL modem and connect it to an ethernet interface)

    2) The SSG5 with a built in ADSL modem.

The two devices are different you cannot upgrade/add ADSL to the SSG5 if it doesn't have it. If you look at the front of the device you will see either an ADSL port or a 56k modem port or a serial port. It sounds like your device doesn't have ADSL.

The SSG20 has 2 mini-pim modules, so you can add ADSL later if you wish.

This sounds like the situation.  The home page of my SSG5 says:

    SSG5-Serial-WLAN

I suppose the model with ADSL will show something appropriate.

Well I will either just continue to deal with this problematic Speedstream DSL router in bridge mode, or perhaps my source will swap this for the DSL model.

    Thanks.

You could ask you carrier if they have bridge-only modem option.  With Verizon this is the Westel 6310 or similar series.  We had much more reliable connections at some sites after swapping out the full feature firewall modems put into bridge mode with these dedicated bridge only modems.
