Juniper Firewall for Studying purpose
Posted: Sep 15, 2007  4:18 AM 92 views
Dear All,

Hope that everyone will be doing well. I want to become professional ( or Expert) in installing , configuring, and adminstring Juniper Firewalls. I am also going to have a chance to implment SS520 to a customer end.

Now I am thinking to buy on SSG 20 or SSG 5 for my styding purpose at home . which one should I go and buy . Can I able to master my self on all the important configuration and concepts in ScreenOS.

If you people recommend any other model pleas do this.

Thanks a lot

A STUDENT : )

You can buy either the SSG5 or SSG20.  The difference between the two is the SSG20 has PIM slots which allow you to insert different media types (i.e. adsl, T1, etc.).  The good news is ScreenOS is the same whether you have an SSG5/20 or SSG520/550.  There are some architectural differences (slot numbers, etc.) and the way you implement HA on SSG5/20 vs SSG520/550 is slightly different.  But otherwise you can do just about everything else.

Just I want to confirm that if I worked on SSG5 OR SSG20 extensively I can easily work on ISG and other higher end firewalls.

Thanks in advance

Again there will be some architectural differences between the ISG and SSG.  But otherwise the ScreenOS is the same.  So if you know one ScreenOS product such as the SSG product you will also be familiar with the ISG.

Thanks a lot,

for the  architectural difference I will take care, up to my knowledge the Architecture of ISG is based on ASIC and the architecture of SSG is based on X86 architecture . we have option of hardware IDP module in ISG firewall.

Also SSG is an UTM device but ISG not : )

Main difference is the way you troubleshoot the higher end units because of the ASIC. Another key difference is Vsys (virtual system) support. but commandline and webui wise you should be farily comfortable if you've worked on any Screenos.
