SSG-550M upgrade to Junos

Hi all,

I have idea to upgrade my SSG-550M firewall's to Junos an I have some question about it.

1. is it actually good idea?
2. do I have any performance improvements after that?
3. what problems should I expect?

Do you have any reason to say that?
As I understand ScreenOS is OS which after some time unfortunately will die, and that's is reason why I want to do it.

Also note that just because it's EOL doesn't mean you have to stop using it

Now, that said, converting to Junos might still be a good idea if there are other reasons to do so   -- for example if you are making an investment in other Junos-based products like EX switches, or there are other features you would like.

But you may, as I think the other responder is suggesting, also find that there are features in ScreenOS that are not (yet) in Junos - and so that may be reason enough to wait.

Howdy - I think that you need to base your conversion decision on your overall, long term path forward. My first real exposure to Juniper firewalls was through ScreenOS and I came to love that OS.

Then as Juniper enhanced and developed JUNOS to become a switching and security platform I started to work with it and frankly came to love the OS. Initially we would not even mention it to customers who were looking for FW solutions as it was to immature when it first came out. That has since changed and it is now a darned good OS for both routing, switching and of course security.

While it is true that it does not have feature parity with ScreenOS it has come a long way and it is my OS of choice, unless specific feature requirements drive one of my customers back to the ScreenOS platform.

Just my two cents.

As for the actual conversion itself, I have not done it but know of individuals who have and I am not aware of any downsides to it.
