Edge, Say Hello to Security At Scale

by Juniper Employee ‎09-30-2012 08:03 AM - edited ‎10-02-2012 12:17 PM

Today Juniper announced a new suite of network solutions for service providers, allowing them to deliver and expand new services to their customers and better monetize their existing network infrastructure investment. From a security perspective we are introducing JunosV Firefly, an exciting software security solution which gives Service Providers who’ve made an investment in virtualization, the option to offer comprehensive security solutions as virtual machines (VMs).

JunosV Firefly enables Service Providers to roll out a hosted security services cloud and adds to their deployment options from Juniper spanning dedicated hardware, high-end hardware and now VMs. With JunosV Firefly, Service Providers can leverage their virtualization investment to create a granular security perimeter, giving dedicated security resources within a cloud construct to tenants and service subscribers.

Customers of hosted firewall services get dedicated security services and assured traffic isolation with JunosV Firefly and Service Providers get the ease of provisioning and management benefits of deploying VMs. Service Providers can also easily offer customizable firewall controls to customers as an additional managed service providing new potential revenue sources built on existing infrastructure.

For businesses looking to deploy discrete security solution packages in large numbers, JunosV Firefly is the enabler of those high value services. JunosV Firefly is currently in beta with many customers.

We are excited to share more about the product as we move towards GA in 1H ’13.

Cloud Services on Security is a great concept :smileyhappy:

This sounds impressive as hell, but what is it?  Is a guest VM that runs under the hypervisor?  Is it part of the DOM0 that runs the hypervisor?  Is it s a software component that runs within the guests that run under the hypervisor?  How compatible is it with other Junos devices?  Does it make sense to buy one as use it as a trainer/simulator/tester for a real device?

Hi Jeff,

This is Seema Kathuria, Product Marketing Manager for JunosV Firefly and vGW Virtual Gateway products.

To answer your questions:

JunosV Firefly is essentially a guest OS (Junos based) that runs on a VM, with support for VMware hypervisors.

Essentially, one of our products runs in the kernel (vGW Virtual Gateway) and one on a VM (JunosV Firefly) to serve different customer use cases, including security & connectivity for private and public clouds, managed security services, and others.

It is possible to use JunosV Firefly as a trainer/simulator/tester for a real device based on some of the features (firewall, IPsec VPN, etc.) in common with Juniper SRX Series Services Gateways.
