Big Data is one of the buzzwords continuously flying around here in the Gartner Security and Risk Management Summit 2012. The main idea at Gartner is increasing security coverage by enabling multiple network devices (IDS, DLP, firewalls, NAC, UTM) and end-point protection software (AV, host IPS to share pieces of information they collect about network entities, file objects and traffic, by utilizing IF-MAP or other methods. Some of this information may come from external sources, such as blacklists, reputation, vulnerability feeds.
