Industry's First Converged Supercore Switches are Shipping!

Friday March 23rd added another important milestone to Juniper's long track record of firsts as the highly anticipated PTX5000 Packet Transport Switch began shipping to Service Provider customers seeking a new solution for managing ever growing and increasingly unpredictable network traffic with MPLS optimized forwarding. As a core component of the Converged Supercore architecture, the PTX product family represents the industry’s first family of Supercore switches built for speed, scale and CAPEX efficiency. The Converged Supercore, and PTX in particular, represents an excellent opportunity for Juniper to distance itself from the competition by offering customers an unprecedented level of capacity, density and power efficiency, combined with extremely low latency and an unmatched economic value proposition. This establishes Juniper as the uncontested leader in network architecture evolution and packet optical convergence.

The shipping of the PTX5000 represents the culmination of a three-year long effort to research, design, build, test and launch the innovative foundation of Juniper’s Converged Supercore architecture. What started as a customer-driven challenge for a more economic and efficient core network architecture became a vision in our CTO office just a few years ago and ultimately on March 23rd turned into a shipping product! It took the devotion, passion and commitment from countless colleagues who dedicated their knowledge and expertise, and poured numerous hours and energy into preparing the PTX5000 for release. Leveraging industry-leading innovation to improve network simplicity and efficiency the PTX 5000 brings a high capacity carrier class solution to our customers to simplify their network and manage network traffic more efficiently. With the delivery of the PTX, we have a product line that truly differentiates us from our competition.

The market excitement around PTX really hit me at this year’s OFC/NFOEC conference. Attendance was up 11% from last year and discussions around Juniper's PTX and Converged Supercore solution continued to generate a lot of buzz. We demoed how the PTX can work with optical gear from NSN as well as legacy networking equipment from Alcatel-Lucent and Cisco.  The beauty of the Converged Supercore as an architecture is that customers can adopt and implement it today, even if they have core IP networks from others.  It can deliver immediate convergence, improved capacity and energy efficiency, and provide the foundation for the new core network that Service Providers need to keep up with the explosive traffic demand from mobile and fixed, video and services.

A bold vision, innovative technology and disruptive economics delivered as promised. The new network means business!
