Mobile World Congress - Redefining Mobile, Defining My Year

by Juniper Employee ‎02-20-2012 03:04 AM - edited ‎02-20-2012 10:34 AM

For me, Mobile World Congress (MWC) is like a birthday or Christmas – inasmuch it’s an annual milestone of my year, orienting me to the seasons. I have to say, it has thrown me a bit this year, being so much later in February, the first Valentine’s Day I have spent at home in years! Nonetheless, here we are, about to go to Barcelona again, an industry event focusing on “redefining mobile”  - and I can’t wait!

As a networking industry veteran, my early memories of MWC (or 3GSM World as it used to be) go back to its original home of Cannes, in the South of France. In those early days Juniper Networks based its activities on a beautiful boat moored in the harbour (the narrow, slippery gang-plank entrance/exit uncluttered with any handrails was always a heart-stopping moment, especially as it was in the days of large, heavy laptops that threatened to alter the carrier’s centre of gravity radically without warning).  Our presence at the show then was perfectly valid but somewhat peripheral – and as my memories of heavy laptops prove, the days of truly mobile computing were yet to come. Network infrastructure for fixed and mobile worlds were siloed apart, and the idea of data-rich applications and content via your mobile phone and/or a smart device was beyond the

horizon.

It seems as though each year that’s passed, Juniper’s story and the world of mobility have travelled towards each other. As the show outgrew Cannes and moved to Barcelona in 2006, we started to take a bigger presence at the event, have a higher profile with more partners, more customers, more media, more analysts. This growth in relevance of Juniper’s portfolio and innovation tracks to the changing mobile network world – the need for pervasive security, fast-increasing demand for performance and scale, the ability to run a single operating system throughout a converged infrastructure, service intelligence that can handle multiple traffic types are just some examples.

To my mind Juniper’s presence at this year’s event is the ultimate testament to how far Juniper has come in mobility:

Juniper can be found in a standalone pavilion (you can’t miss us in Courtyard 6, between Halls 3 and 5), where we’ll be demonstrating several solutions that help to redefine mobile infrastructure, including Trusted Mobility (including Junos Pulse), M2M & Cloud services, Video Optimization/Adaptive Video delivery, and open, programmable networks.

For anyone who likes gaming, a really interesting place at the Juniper booth will be the OnLive demo – interactive, lightening fast games that really show how important robust upload and download capability on the network is.

We will also be talking about the latest addition to the Juniper portfolio, the Juniper Networks ACX Series Universal Access Routers. ACX Series helps operators to extend infrastructure intelligence into the mobile access space, using Junos – a great example of our innovation in bringing mobile and IP closer together.

We have a fantastic line-up of global and regional executives plus solutions specialists present this year, so please contact  melissap at juniper dot net to arrange a customer meeting.

Our CEO, Kevin Johnson, is a keynote speaker the morning of Thursday March 1,  - within the topic of “Driving the Mobile Technology Evolution”. A great opportunity to hear Juniper’s vision for mobile infrastructure evolution in line with business demand over the next decade.

Another event within MWC to recommend is the LTE Forum, sponsored by our partner Openwave. On Tuesday February 28, 3pm CET, Hall 7C (you need to pre-register per the event link above). The topic under discussion is Network Optimization & Data Monetization – Juniper will be participating as a speaker in the debate.

Whether you are in Barcelona yourself or keeping an eye from afar, be sure to follow @junipernetworks for news, photos and insights from the show floor. And you can follow all the Twitter conversations from #MWC12 attendees in real-time throughout the show.

Despite the usual challenges of weather, taxi lines, and crowds this year promises to be the best yet for MWC visitors – hope to see you there!

Nothing about wifi offloading?  I could nicely fit under “redefining mobile” umbrella
