Request for an excellent JUNOS Simulator and Practice lab workbook for JNCIA-JUNOS and JNCIS-SEC.

Hello Liz Burns,

I really appreciate the effort that Juniper has put into the study guides and the computer-based training videos for the JNCIA and the higher exams. However, I think that candidates studying for Juniper exams, (especially the JNCIA-JUNOS and JNCIS) will still need a simulator that can emulate a real-life router and switch in operation.

The simulators I have seen out there good but not excellent. Hence I believe that if Juniper can produce one for its partners and people intending to become Juniper certified, this would be great.

I anticipate your soonest reply  to my humble request.

Thanks,

Kunle,

U.K.

Hi Kunkle,

have a look at the Juniper Education Courseware if you are looking for lab guides. They are very helpful albeit a bit pricey.

Regarding the simulator, I find the existing emulator excellent for routers. There isn't much you cannot do with them. For switches you'll still need real ones though, and I doubt that's going to change anytime soon.

Mark

Re: Request for an excellent JUNOS Simulator and Practice lab workbook for JNCIA-JUNOS and JNCIS-SEC

Hi  MarkG,

let me disagree with you. actually it is not so excellent as you state it in your reply. It has a lot of limitations including supported interfaces (fxp or em, which have a lot of limits by its architecture nature) and to say truly it crashes more often than work.... and I completely agree with the previous post, it is very important topic. I love Junos and was trying to propose it to my friends .... but they told me that free training pdf materials without practice worth nothing and partially I agree with them. Why to spend money for education purpose on Juniper equipment (even old and used one) if you can get Cisco simulator (dynamips) for free with a lot of features supported? You can practice on it any feature you will find in the IOS software configuration guides. And comparing to  dynamips .....well,  to say truly, there is nothing to compare from Juniper with dynamips (a lot of interfaces and modules supported, host PC memory optimization, ....).

It would be invaluable input from Juniper if they will create/write at least a driver for the Ethernet (FE/GE) and Serial interfaces. From my point of view it is even more important than free training materials and certification. People study those free materials available from Juniper, learn everything by hart, pass associate/specialist exam level, .... and after 4-6 months they can hardly remember even simple topics because they didn't have practice and as a result - they start to afraid complex technology projects. I am personally trying to work 2-3 hours everyday with dynamips and I am really missing stable simulator for Junos with Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet and Serial interfaces support.

There was also a rumor about the reason why Juniper is not making it stating that than it will be easy to use it in the production. And it is also not true. Because it will be emulated "in a software" , like dynamips, it will have a very low performance (and packet rate) and it is impossible to use it for the production purposes. It is only usable for education purpose.

Re: Request for an excellent JUNOS Simulator and Practice lab workbook for JNCIA-JUNOS and JNCIS-SEC

Sometime ago I've got an update from Cisco stating that they made it's internal IOS emulator (the project was called "IOU"  - a ported version of IOS Software for UNIX) available for their students and starts making money on it on cheap virtual labs.

"Virtual Cisco IOS Labs for Routing and Switching"

....

Cisco Learning Labs for routing and switching are real bundles of practice labs, powered by Cisco IOS Software on UNIX.

....

More information is available via this link.

I LOVE Junos and posting this information with a  hope that sometimes Juniper will response with it's own official JUNOS emulator and made it available for their registered users for free and allow them to practice more with JUNOS and it's features (including multicast, QoS, firewall features and more). And in case you will need a beta-tester, please, contact me :smileyhappy:).

Re: Request for an excellent JUNOS Simulator and Practice lab workbook for JNCIA-JUNOS and JNCIS-SEC

Anatoly,

This is what I have been asking for from Juniper officials for a long time but to no avail. I dont think we will get it at all.

I have been trying to develop a topology with 1 SRX100 firewall, and I just cannot figure it out.

I don't know what else to do.

I have done JNCIA-JUNOS.

What I am looking for is a simulator for JNCIS-SEC.

Cisco have an excellent simulator, Packet Tracer.  This contains all the commands you'll need to pass CCNA and partial CCNP.  In addition ASDM is available as a demo, so you can practise the GUI on their ASA's.....so why haven't Juniper?  Also, why don't Juniper have an official certification page on Facebook?
