Juniper Gets the Lead Out

July 21, 2016 may seem like a long way off today, but between now and then Juniper will be working diligently to convert our products to achieve RoHS2 compliance. That’s the European Union’s new directive on the restriction of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, which includes among other things, that our products be lead-free. By July 21, 2016, all companies doing business with EU countries must meet RoHS 2.

We’ve laid out a detailed plan to meet the RoHS2 deadline. We’ve already finished a detailed analysis of our products to determine how best to achieve compliance and have created the following approach to those impacted products.

What You Need to Know

The vast majority of our products will be converted to RoHS2 compliance and will be available globally. The conversion will be transparent to customers and the most noticeable difference will be the RoHS2-compliant product label on the hardware and packaging.

There’s a very small percentage of our products for which we are currently unable to complete RoHS2 conversion alternatives. We will make those products available on a restricted basis, only to those of you and your customers outside of the affected countries. We’ll continue to work on needed replacement products. To be certain there is no impact to you or your customers in RoHS2 countries, we’ll have a complete mapping of equivalent products available.

Finally, we’ll announce end-of-life (EOL) for a number of our older products when the conversion to RoHS2 compliance is complete. Your account managers will work closely with you and your customers to help you through the transition to our newer architectures and technologies.

What You Can Do

We’re putting a variety of tools and training in place for our partner account managers so they can help make the transition to RoHS2 as easy as possible for you and your customers. In fact, if you haven’t heard from your account manager, give him or her a call and tell them you want to discuss RoHS2.

There’s a lot to be done before the July 2016 deadline. We’ve set up a page on Partner Center specifically for you to get RoHS information. Right now, you’ll find a RoHS overview, RoHS FAQs and a slide deck that provides a review of RoHS as well as Juniper’s plan to meet compliance. As we get the lead out, we’ll make information available to you as soon as possible. Check Partner Center frequently for updates.

This is a major program for Juniper and a great deal of coordination will be required to ensure we are in full compliance by the deadline and that we are able to support and guide you and our customers through the transition.

This is a great time to review your plans with your account managers and take advantage of the RoHS2 discussions as strategic opportunities.

Wasn't the RoHS recast announced back in 2011? If EOL notifications if not already out by now it seems a little close to the deadline considering the time that it takes for corporates/enterprises to certify whole new platforms. I think this creates risk for Juniper as it forces enterprise customers to look to the market when they might not have needed to do so. When that occurs, Juniper needs to be able to stand on its own two feet with a strong competitive proposition or risk a mass exodus. Challenging times.
