Cannot ping juniper dx using larger than 1 mb packet

‎10-20-2008 03:00 AM

Dear all,

Please help me on this, I use Juniper DX3280 and I need to disable the Large ICMP packet blocking because my application server required it to do so. Please if anyone can show me where I can adjust the packet size for the DX box. I have done this on the Juniper Netscreen Firewall but I can't find the setting in the Juniper DX.

thanks

I am not aware of any configuration option to set a limit on packet sizes.  The DX is a proxy so would be terminating the the connection to a VIP and blocks any other traffic, have you enabled IP forwarding to allow the DX to pass traffic not destined for a VIP?   When I try to ping a DX I find I am limited to the size I can specify:

# ping -s 125000 172.26.31.206
ping: packet size too large: 125000 > 65507

where -s is the number of data bytes to send in the ping; 125000 is 1Mb.

What I found is:

# ping -s 1477 172.26.31.206
PING 172.26.31.206 (172.26.31.206): 1477 data bytes
1485 bytes from 172.26.31.206: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.931 ms
1485 bytes from 172.26.31.206: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.952 ms
^C
--- 172.26.31.206 ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.931/0.942/0.952/0.010 ms

#ping -s 1478 172.26.31.206
PING 172.26.31.206 (172.26.31.206): 1478 data bytes
^C
--- 172.26.31.206 ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

Which I believe is limited by my MTU.
