Getting Ahead of the Curve in the Next Wave of IT-Driven Competition with Contrail Cloud Platform

In the business world, Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter is a legendary figure. He is the author of 18 books and numerous articles including Competitive Strategy, Competitive Advantage, Competitive Advantage of Nations, and On Competition. A six-time winner of the McKinsey Award for the best Harvard Business Review (HBR) article of the year, Professor Porter is the most cited author in business and economics.

 

In the latest issue of HBR, Mr. Porter authored an article named “How Smart, Connected Products are Transforming Competition”, where he provides a framework for developing strategy and achieving competitive advantage in a smart, connected world. He deems the IT-driven automation of individual business activities in the 1960s and 1970s, and the rise of the Internet that enabled coordination and integration across individual activities in the 1980s and 1990s, as the first two waves where IT radically reshaped competition and strategy.

 

We are in the middle of the 3rd wave where IT is becoming an integral part of the smart, connected products themselves. “Embedded sensors, processors, software, and connectivity in products, coupled with a product cloud in which product data is stored and analyzed and some applications are run, are driving dramatic improvements in product functionality and performance”.

 

Network operators have been riding the second wave, providing connectivity to people and businesses. But it is time for them to think about what they need to do to really get ahead of the curve in this new wave we are in. Once this new wave sets in, network operators will need to connect “Things” that are many order of magnitude larger in number than people or businesses, automatically provide differentiated services on demand, and guarantee security of the product clouds and reliability of the connectivity.
