Brand new out of box QFX-5110-32Q no interfaces

‎05-07-2018 12:26 PM

Hello,

We just bought a bunch of QFX5110-48S and 32Q.

The 48S will show all interfaces and channelized interfaces out of the box with a "show interface terse"

However, the 32Q, after opening 3 boxes, this is all I get from the "show interface terse":

root> show interfaces terse

We bought these switch to form a Layer 2 only VC, my SE confirmed the interfaces should be visible.  He recommended to upgrade to the Juniper stable release (17.2) which I did on a unit, no change.  The 3rd one I took out of the box was already running 17.2

Am I missing something here or we ended up on a **bleep**ty lot? (2x EX4600 in RMA and now about to RMA 4x QFX-5110-32Q)

Did you... install any optics? I'm pretty sure QSFP+ ports don't show up without one.

Try a different version of code.

I had the same issue on 17.x code with a qfx5100.

After 20 minutes of running no interfaces.
Multiple reboots and no change.

Don't know how this gets past qa?

For QFX5K I would highly recommend ONLY running 14.1X53, for which there is a new D47 version.  The only exception is if some form of EVPN/VXLAN is required, and then (I believe) you need 17.3 or higher (accept 18.1).

If you have same issue with any 14.1X53 release or any 17.3+, then I suggest you open a JTAC case for investigation.

Good luck!

Guys, seriously--add some optics. Interfaces don't show up without them.

Interfaces configured:

test@test> show configuration |display set |match "et-0"
set interfaces et-0/0/48 ether-options 802.3ad ae0
set interfaces et-0/0/49 ether-options 802.3ad ae0
set interfaces et-0/0/50 unit 0 family ethernet-switching
set interfaces et-0/0/51 unit 0 family ethernet-switching
set interfaces et-0/0/52 unit 0 family ethernet-switching
set interfaces et-0/0/53 unit 0 family ethernet-switching

Hardware only in 48 and 49

test@test> show chassis hardware |match QSFP
    Xcvr 48      REV 01   740-032986   XXXXXXXXXXX       QSFP+-40G-SR4
    Xcvr 49      REV 01   740-032986   XXXXXXXXXXX       QSFP+-40G-SR4

Only 48 and 49 interfaces show up

test@test> show interfaces terse |match et-
et-0/0/48               up    up
et-0/0/48.0             up    up   aenet    --> ae0.0
et-0/0/49               up    up
et-0/0/49.0             up    up   aenet    --> ae0.0

I am sorry, but that is really brain dead from Juniper to hide interfaces just because SFP is missing or damaged. I got a QFX5110-48S where two ports don't even show up in "show chassis hardware". Even if they hide the xe- part in show interfaces, they should at least show in the chassis hardware.

It should be good if you open a case with JTAC, this sounds like a PR.  Interfaces should show up under "show chassis hardware".  They are some exceptions with 100G transceivers that requires configuration, but that should not affect xe interfaces.

Now, if you are using 40G transceivers and need it to channelize to 10G, you should be able to see the 40G transceiver under "show chassis hardware"
