  • 1.  EX-3200 Dual Personality Ports

We were suprised to find that the EX-3200, unlike the EX-4200, makes the last four ethernet ports "dual personality" with the 4 ports added with a optional Uplink module.  Our indication of that was the port gave us no link when a workstation was attached.  Looking at "Show interfaces terse", the port was missing from the list.  I'm not crazy about this design, as people in the field need to know that they cannot plug into port 0/20 if a filber is in port 1/0.  We might have to put an empty RJ45 shell into the ports to stop people from trying to use them.

    Hi Dan,

There is a KB about this issue. However, the KB is not really correct, this issue is also on EX3200-48T/P.

Using EX3200, there is no use to offer customer the 4xSFP uplink module (except they need fiber uplink)

    Hi Dan,

It is basically a one to one ratio of the uplink ports to the built in copper ports on the EX-3200.  For example, if a transceiver is installed in the first port on 4 port uplink module, port 20 on a 24 port EX-3200 or port 44 on 48 port ex3200 will not be available.  The uplink module port with a transceiver installed in it always takes precedence over the built in copper port and cannot be over-ridden by connecting a device to the built in port.

Included is a link to a KB that explains how the uplink modules work on the EX-3200.

Please note that the base ports on EX3200 are "lost" only when using GbE uplink module. If you are installing the 10GbE uplink module on the EX3200 then the switch works as a 24 G + 2 10G.

If 24G+4G is important to you I would also suggest you look at EX2200 that was released this year for future. It has an attractive price point and suppports 24G+4G operation.
