  • 1.  EX4200 Hardware Difference - Old and New models

    Posted 12-21-2016 02:47

    Hi All,

We have some old(about 5 years) working ex4200-48T switches off the rack. Should we buy new 4200-48T switches for our new project or use the old ones? . Is there any hardware enhancement on new models?. Will the old models support current JunOS code?

It depends on the usecase, contact sales team, they will help you to determine you the model based on the use case.

An older EX4200 should operate in the same manner as a newer one, so I wouldn't buy newer EX4200 (maybe EX4300 if you feel like you want something "newer").  You may want to check the bootloader version to be sure it is up-to-date, but as long as that is upgraded, your "old" EX4200 should run any supported code.  The only other thing that you might consider is swapping out the uplink module for one that uses SFP / SFP+ as XFP modules tend to be pretty expensive, especially when compared to using direct-attach cables.  I would of course suggest getting a second power-supply for each unit if this is a critical application.

Thanks Ron for the reply. We are using these as top of rack switches for datacenter servers and have redundant power supplies. Also we use 10G XFPs (Juniper made) to connect ex9214 core switches. I thought there might be any hardware enhancements for the new switches.

There is a HW difference in the newer EX switches, EX4300 vs [older] EX4200.  The EX4300 has 40GE interfaces which can be used for either downlink/uplink or VC.  The EX4300 has no built-in VC (128G) interface as the EX4200 had.

The EX4200 SW will stop at release 15.1 - will still be support for sometime to come, while the EX4300 will be support with 17.1 and beyond.  The EX4300 also supports newer ELS CLI, same as EX9200, while EX4200 (regardless of SW version being used) support the older legacy CLI.

Both platforms fall under Limited Lifetime Warrenty HW support.

    Hope this helps.
