EX4200 Virtual Chassis Issue

‎05-23-2012 03:34 AM

Hi Guys,

I'm new to Juniper so please forgive my ignorance.

I have 2 x EX4200 48 port PoE switches and I'm trying to configure the virtual chassis. I've followed the KB arcticle I found on setting it up. I don't seem to be able to pass traffic across the chassis though. A device plugged in one of the switches cannot ping a device plugged in to the other one. I'm clearly doing something stupid but I don't know what Smiley Happy Please see below for some cli outputs:

root@EXNJEX1> show virtual-chassis status

Virtual Chassis ID: bdfb.de9b.ecb4 Virtual Chassis Mode: Enabled                                            Mstr           Mixed Neighbor List Member ID  Status   Serial No    Model     prio  Role      Mode ID  Interface 0 (FPC 0)  Prsnt    BQ0211432347 ex4200-48p 250  Master*      N  1  vcp-0 1 (FPC 1)  Prsnt    BQ0211431713 ex4200-48p 200  Backup       N  0  vcp-0

Member ID for next new member: 2 (FPC 2)

{master:0} root@EXNJEX1>

It's interesting that show ethernet-switching interfaces shows 48 interfaces and show interfaces ? shows 96 physicsal interfaces. What am I doing wrong? Smiley Happy

Thanks

You need to ensure all of your interfaces are configured for ethernet switching. A default configuration includes interfaces ge-0/x/x, so now that you added a member to the virtual chassis (I
view a single switch as a 1-member virtual
chassis), you need to configure the 1/x/x interfaces the same way.

Thanks for your reply. How would I go about doing this from the cmd line? I assume I don't have to do this for every single interface?

try

set interfaces interface-range myRange member-range ge-1/0/0 to ge-1/0/47

set interfaces interface-range myRange unit 0 family ethernet-switching

this should put all interfaces on member 1 into an interface range called myRange, then put all interfaces in that range into switching mode.

Thanks very much. I would of thought that this should be working out of the box when joining a member to a virtual chassis?

Ideally what im after for the minute is just a basic switch. Surely I shouldnt have to put different ports in different groups? What I'm try to achieve is pretty much the most basic config possible for a switch.

you can put all interfaces in one group

just add more member-ranges like

interface-range name

>member-range ge-0/0/0 to ge-0/0/47

>member-range ge-1/0/0 to ge-1/0/47

>member-range ge-2/0/0 to ge-2/0/47

and of course if you dont like ranges you can individually configure each interface

set interface ge-1/0/18 unit 0 family ethernet-switching

but you will need to find some idiot who types this all in or you will go crazy before you hit the 96th interface;-)
