  • 1.  How to disable management interface alarms

    Posted 06-02-2009 22:46

I am having a problem with an EX-4200 stack.  We are getting alarms on all the switches in the stack.  When I run a show chassis alarms I get the following :

     1 alarms currently active
    Alarm time               Class  Description
2009-06-02 12:17:10 CDT  Major  Management Ethernet Link Down

I disabled both the me0 and vme0 interfaces in the configuration and can see this in the show interface:

     root@dubdist1> show interfaces me0
Physical interface: me0, Administratively down, Physical link is Up
Interface index: 1, SNMP ifIndex: 33
Type: Ethernet, Link-level type: Ethernet, MTU: 1514
      Device flags   : Present
      Interface flags: Down SNMP-Traps
Current address: 00:21:59:c7:76:c1, Hardware address: 00:21:59:c7:77:3f
      Last flapped   : 2009-05-29 12:20:01 CDT (4d 12:20 ago)
        Input packets : 0
        Output packets: 0

Logical interface me0.0 (Index 7) (SNMP ifIndex 34)
        Flags: Device-Down SNMP-Traps Encapsulation: ENET2
        Input packets : 0
        Output packets: 0
        Protocol eth-switch
          Flags: Is-Primary
    root@dubdist1> show interfaces vme
Physical interface: vme, Administratively down, Physical link is Up
Interface index: 68, SNMP ifIndex: 35
      Type: Mgmt-VLAN, Link-level type: Mgmt-VLAN, MTU: 1518, Speed: Unlimited
      Device flags   : Present Running
      Interface flags: Down SNMP-Traps
      Link type      : Full-Duplex
      Link flags     : None
Current address: 00:21:59:c7:76:c1, Hardware address: 00:21:59:c7:76:c1
      Last flapped   : Never
        Input packets : 0
        Output packets: 0

Logical interface vme.0 (Index 6) (SNMP ifIndex 36)
        Flags: Down Link-Layer-Down Device-Down SNMP-Traps Encapsulation: ENET2
        Bandwidth: 0
        Input packets : 0
        Output packets: 0
        Protocol inet
          Flags: Is-Primary

Now I suppose technically the interface is down and the alarm is correct, but should the system really be showing a major alarm on a disabled interface?  We don't want to use the out of band ports for management and are concerned that the constant alarm light is concealing alarms we actually care about.

     Hi snaslund,

I'd expect it to be the same as JUNOS. Please try:

set chassis alarm management-ethernet link-down ignore

     Cheers,

We figured it out so I thought I would share the solution.

You need to use the "set chassis alarm management-ethernet link-down ignore" command and the alarms clear whether the interface is disabled or not.

A little bit non-intuitive but as long as it works 🙂

That command did not quite solve the problem.  The master switch alarm cleared but the other members still show an alarm led.  Funny thing is that show chassis alarms shows no active alarms.  This is looking like a bug at this point or something specific to a stacked setup.

    Hi

I have had the same problem on a two 4200 chassis I was not able to remove the backup routing engine alarm.

I just remember that it was due to the rescue config not correctly initialized on this one.

Try to set the rescue configuration again from the main or the backup or line cards !
