How to solve overlapping VLANs in VXLAN environment?

‎09-12-2019 04:45 AM

Hi experts,

Is it possible to have overlapping VLAN in VXLAN environment?
We will migrate from several traditional L2 environments to a VXLAN environment.
We then have problems with the fact that we have some single VLANs that exist in several of our legacy L2 domains. Then we now have problems when we only have one VXLAN DC.
My question is if it is possible to have overlapping VLAN in VXLAN ? I.E two access ports have the same vlan ID but different VNI and thus cannot talk directly in between them.

Suggestions on how to solve this are appreciated.

Thanks Niklas

Hi Niklas,

Think you can achieve this using "flexible-ethernet-services" and encapsulation vlan-bridge on the interfaces and "encapsulate-inner-vlan" on the VXLAN.  Please see this:

https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/topics/topic-map/evpn-vxlan-flexible-vlan-tag.html

Others have done something of this order, so please also check this if you will:

https://forums.juniper.net/t5/Ethernet-Switching/Q-in-VNI-and-overlapping-vlans-in-a-evpn-vxlan-ip-f...

Hope this helps.

In short, assocaite vlans with different vni. This is how vxlan is designed/proposed to overcome this scenario.

Please use instance-type virtual-switch so that you can use same VLANs on different instances.
